OK, I will be running my own ground this year.I am wondering if I should get drought/hail etc crop insurance? Any pointers? We are talking 23-35 acres tops this year. Oats, corn, maybe beans, with possibly some hay unless I can work out renting a few meadows for hay.

I signed up for Revenue Assurance.
APH yield 148 bu/A
75% level
price 4.00/bu
Guarantee 111 bu/ a
Coverage $444/A
cost $22.37 I have some sandy ground and if we don't get timely rains thru the summer, I lose 8 to 19 acres out of 60. Wouldn't be without it. Chris

Just my 2 cents but this year I think I would go CRC (Crop Revenue Coverage) because of the high grain prices. If you don't have proven yeilds on your land you can use your county's average. I don't know how familiar you are with the types of plans, but with a CRC plan you get paid for a percentage of yield loss X a predetermined price per bushel or price per bushel at harvest.

Example

County yield avg for corn: 150 bu/ac
Your 2007 crop: 100 bu/ac
Corn price at harvest $4

50*4=200

If you had a 75% CRC plan you would get:

.75*200=150 bucks per acre!

Not bad for a plan that's probably around 20 bucks an acre. This is how it works with grain crops, I don't know how it would handle your hay.
