Let's talk about old iron. Anything that began production prior to 1940.

My favorite early-model tractor is probably the John Deere D (1923 - 1953). Some people like sleek tractors, but I like mine short and squatty.

My second favorite is the F-Series Farmall, the F-20 in particular (1932 - 1939). third party image

I like how exposed the engine is on the F-Series. It's almost as if someone forgot to put the hood on or something.

What about the rest of ya'll? What do you like in the older iron?

Nothing sounds better than a Case L, just as the log hits the blade and the governor opens up...

I don't know that I could name just one favorite :-)

However I am partial to the F series Farmalls and the H & M. Kinda like the looks of the Case 40-72 also :-)

I really like the old wheat country Allis's. The earlier U's, before the late 1936 models. And the short fender 20 35 tractors. I also like the early D John Deere's too. But, I don't own one. I do have a few of the old AC's though. There are a lot of those early tractors that would be nice to have.

hillbilly: My favourite is the Massey Harris GP, 4 wheel drive and definitely an idea that was ahead of it's time. Had that caught on, I expect all tractors over 100 hp would have been built that way or articulated. Quite frankly, we missed the boat.

I might add, I don't have photo, however there are 5 of these in the tractor photo gallery. Just go to photo gallery and type in Massey Harris GP, built in the 1930s all the way.

My favourite is the Oliver 90. Dad bought mine new in 1948 - perhaps a few improvements over the pre 1940 models - but basically the same as the 1930s 28-44. Was the tractor I grew up on and never seemed to run out of power, although it could soon bury itself when the ground was soft!

The 9N was designed to do one thing and that was to replace a team of horses on a 40-60-80 acre farm. To that end, it was magnificent. Icing on the cake was the ferguson system which, all told, resulted in something like 400 attachments, each designed to make the farmers life easier. Proof is how many not only survive but work their little hearts out almost every day. The 9N is my choice as well.

The CO-OP #2; a low riding, stubby, boxy, rugged little brute. I fondly remember the one my grandpap had.

For me the F series Farmalls the 12, 14, 20, and 30. To me these were the glory years for I.H. with the great letter series that followed. Hard to overlook the Farmall H and M both introduced in 1939. Migraine

I guess my favorite would be my A/C model M crawler's. My dad used these tractors farming in the 40, 50, and 60's. I still use these same tractors in my discing business. My next would be Dad's F 12 Farmall. Stan

IN the old old catagory, it would be the 30-60 Case Two cylinder opposed . In the Old Pre 1940, It would be the 1939 LA Case.

I saw one last weekend up here near Edmonton. FUlly restored and running, I think it was a 1912, does that sound right? I never even knew that Case made such an engine design.

All these suggestions, and nobody has mentioned the venerable Fordson Model F? That's the tractor that introduced lots of folks to "power farming"... In fact, by 1923, 75% of all tractors on American farms were Fordson F's! Trouble was, Henry Ford did the same thing with the Model F that he did with the the Model T automobile; namely, he kept basically the same design in production for way too long, and others came along with improved designs (i.e., frame-mounted cultivators and other implements) and ate his lunch. He got preoccupied with making the Model A automobile anyway, and in 1928 all of the Fordson tooling was shipped to Cork, Ireland.

My 2¢ worth.
