Ok Horse guy&gals
I have mare that has thrush on her front hoofs. I bought some thrush Med (Stuff really really stinks and stains everrything) to put on the horse. I can't seem to find out how long I need to treat her with this stuff. Any of you all have a run in with thrush? This is my first time having this problem.

Thanks Sam

An old timer said this.Clean the hoof up and use the mastitis medicine used on milk cows around the frog area. This is usually a rear hoof problem in stalled horses. He felt thrush was caused by bacteria not fungus.

Thanks for the input everyone. Got her in the barn with fresh bedding. Also heard that iodine and sugar paste will work at half the price of this thrush buster stuff.

thanks again.

Sam,
The sugar paste will work, however use Betadine solution and not iodine. Iodine is 90% alcohol. Betadine solution mixed with table sugar to the consistency of a paste. Use very liberally. We use it mostly on foot abcesses after they have been "opened" . The sugar acts as a poultice and helps dry. Diapers have been used but don't allow the foot to breathe. It works as a sweat if left on too long. We use cotton and vet wrap when we have to wrap a foot. The foot breathes better. A horse absorbs most of the moisture in the foot through the bottom of the foot. If you put plastic over a foot it will get very soft and mushy. Not good when you want it to dry.

Best stuff I ever seen is a product called "Thrush Buster". Only needed one treatment on one of the gaming ponies here. Like everybody else said gotta try and keep em dry. If its real bad ya might have use a diaper and duct tape boot for a while to keep em dry.

The best product for thrush is Kopertox. Conatins copper sulfate. Clean the feet very well with a hoof pick. especially the clefts of the frog ( the triangular part)and the heal bulbs. After cleaning hold the foot upside down between your knees and dose the frog and clefts. Let it soak in some then let foot down. Do this at least 1xday. 2x/ day is best. Should clear up after a week, depending on how bad it is. As everyone says clean and dry is best. I know it is hard with the wet conditions. I you have a pasture, as Allen suggests is best. Room to run and alot of times they will fling out the mud/manure if they can run on their own. If not clean the feet at least every other day. Good luck.

When I last had a horse I would use Kopertox preventitely (if that is a word?) may be once every other week.

If that horse is in a stall make sure that the bedding is clean and dry. Thrush thrives in wet, compacted manure/mud packed around the sole.

Been a common problem in Missouri this past year. A friend had the same problem with a couple of his horses. He was told it was cause by the dry summer we had then something about a pariste that comes out when dry, then when it get wet it digs in.

Like Allan say's , and above all else ya got to keep those hooves dry ! It's a fungus , like our athletes foot only more serious . Ya might want to find an OLD vet in your area and give them a call . Old time vetting seems to work better sometimes than the new and always expensive vetting . ...Randy

Try Clorox bleach, full strength, using a paint brush once a day and no longer then three days. It doesn"t matter if you get her out of the mud or not as it will dry the hoof out.

Sam,

Is there any way you can get that horse out on some pasture?

I'd clean 'er up good, dose the frogs real good with iodine and turn her out. You'be got to get her out of that slop and mud.

You should see it turn around in about three days.

Either that or bring her in the barn with good, dry bedding. Gotta keep the feet clean. Thrush can't live in a dry enviornment.

Treat her every day.

My vet told me that the best way to take care of thrush was to mix up chlorine bleach water and either spay it on heavy or put their foot in a bucket of chlorie bleach water twice a day for ten days. Don"t forget to dump the bleach water around the stall.
