Thoughts on corn

Howdy folks,

As I'm working up a plan for the farm and it's possible future routes I am tossing around some ideas in my head. One that has got me pondering is using the corn fodder for something other than simply disking back into the soil. I know people who shred and then round bale the fodder but most of them have cattle of their own to feed it to. Others simply graze their cattle in the field after harvest. My question is this: Is there any market for small square bales of corn fodder? If so, where? Also, how much are people charging per bale or per ton for this if it is in fact being marketed anywhere? Of course, the nutrient benefits that such an action would remove may overshadow the benefits of selling this material but that is something that would have to be calculated on my part. But like I said, it's just an idea at this point. I look forward to your thoughts. God bless.

The confinements are paying 50 bucks a ton in NW Iowa this fall for big squares or rounds of cornstalks. Some will take off half of their stalks to keep some for soil nutrition.

As of now there is not a big market to be had.

A few are replacing hay with corn stalks and corn glutten to feed stockcows.

And with corn at 3dollars we will see more of that in our area.Hay ground will turn in to corn and they will bale stalks to feed cattle to get the most out of the land.

But in this area the cost of baling is about all you will be able to sell the stalks for cause of the vast amount of stalks around here.

By baling the stalks you do lose nutrients for the soil so more fertilizer will have to be bought.

I can't see where selling small bales of stalks will be of much value here in Iowa.

Just my thoughts Gary
