I am doing some cleaning around our place. There is a ford 302 motor someone said it is worth keeping. Is this something that has value other than scrap? Thanks Stan

The crank is super high carbon steel. Turn it over and take a 20 pounder and brake out the crank. Top dollar at scrap yards. Used in foundry to flux the steel when liquid. Is the way of old motors.

Salvage yard owner opined that with the recent gains in iron prices, a lot of stuff that would have been held back for parts in other times, is now going to the smelter. He expects that down the road it will be more difficult than it has been to find some parts and therefore they will command a higher price. You might consider that if what you have is not worth more than scrap value now, it cannot depreciate much and if you keep it long enough it could become worth several multiples of what it is now worth. This kind of thinking may be part of a hang-over from the Great Depression.

Maybe if it's a boss 302 but highly unlikely. Dave

How can I tell if it is a boss 302? Some one dropped it off here and I know nothing about it's history. Stan

If the right person were to come along that 302 would have some value, but not much. The sad part is that even if the engine was in excellent condition, most folks still want to pay just about what it is worth as scrap. I'd say just throw it on the heap and let it go.
