Engine assembled, clutch assembled, engine stand reassembled (clutch was too heavy), Engine painted, Clutch aligned, splines greased, engine installed,

What? Where did this come from? Ahh, nuts...

Engine removed, throwout bearing installed, engine reinstalled.

I was so mad I couldn't even be mad. I just sat down.

Let's go Mountaineers
Aaron

I can beat that!!! in reply to Aaron Ford, 12-03-2006 15:50:10
I can beat all those. Once I bought a Yugo basket case for $10. It was just the body shell and all parts in boxes - seats and all. Being a top notch self-taught mechanic, I put 'er back together again without the help of any manuals or drawings and without actually seeing one of the cars assembled. It started right up and ran fine but I was amazed at the backward engineering of that car! It had four SUICIDE DOORS and they put the dashboard, all controls and even the steering wheel BEHIND the driver's seat!! You had to reach back over your shoulder to drive it and, yup, it had three reverse gears and one forward. It was also damn hard to drive at night since they had located the taillights on the FRONT and the headlights on the REAR. What a DUMB way to build a car. Drove it many years though and always got lots of admiring glances.

I bought a 51 ford while I was in Texas the guy I bought from said battery was bad we would have to push to start . When I got home raised hood Battery was busted & he had used coat hangers for Spark plug wires with String tied between to hold then in place . the thing ran good enough to get home .

I quit doing my own brakes when I had kids. I was once in a hurry to get to work after doing a brake job on my 56 Ford. Put the wheel on and backed up, hit the brakes and seemed to go faster. Looked up the hill to see the drum sitting on the ground.

A friend of mine had a nice low mileage Peugeot that would not go in any gear yet every thing seem right. He was disgusted with it and sold it to me for $50.00. Long story short, the splines on the transmission end of the driveshaft were gone. Put in a new driveshaft and drove that car for many years. Sometimes you win one.

did almost the same thing on an amc amx one time.wanted to install a new throwout bearing when i installed a new clutch, had the new bearing sittng on the dash.installed the new clutch got it all reassembled.went to start it up and there was the new throwout still sitting on the dash.was a little more than mad.took me 1/2 as long to take it apart and reassemble it with the new bearing the second time. you are not alone in this type of screw up. bill m.

And ya think that is bad How about being a mechanic paid on flat rate and busten your donkey and after doing a tough engine rebuild in a car that had all the Junk ya could shove under the hood as you slide out from under the car after putting up the exhaust system and all the steering linkage and ya lift your creeper up ya find the UPPER half of a main bearing and ya start thinking DID i forget that one and to be on the safe side ya get back down under the car and tear everything apart drop the oil and pan and go back thru all the mains and there is nothing missing so ya put it all back together and come out from under it again only to find a rod bearing shell layen there So ya go back thru it again and find nothing and ya start thinking about all this and each time while you were under there the parts manager came out to ask ya something and each time he would slip a bearing shell under your creeper . Paybacks are ----- well ya know what i mean .

I worked for a dealer that took on the German car known as the Goliath made by Borgward. They also made the Lloyd a smaller car than the Goliath. The Goliath which was a formidable competitor in the racing domain. The goliath had a 4 cyl air cooled flat opposed in the front wheel drive 2door which was the same size as vw.The Borgword outfit also made a copy of the vw van and we had one that needed a transmission and had a guy in the shop that put a trans from the small sedan into the van.It then had 3speeds in reverse &1speed forward.I felt sorry for him since he also took the trans out of the car.The borgward also made the upscale car known as Borgward When they went bellyup it ended up in a so.American country.

I know of a guy who put an Allis Chalmers "B" all together and found it had 3 reverse gears and one forward. No problem!! Just remove the ring gear and turn it around. I am not going to say who it was!!!

A guy i worked with at a Ford car dealer, back in 1948-51, repaired the rear differential on a '41 Ford. Those rear ends could be assembled wrong, especially if you had it upside down on the shop floor. The ring gear center section could be installed on the wrong side of the pinion gear! All went well-he put it all back together, installed it in the car. Started the car, put it in reverse, turned around to look behind the car, let out the clutch and----BANG!!---ran into the work bench in front of the car! Being he was the head mechanic at that shop, it took a long time to live that down!

Doing that is even worse then forgetting to put the rotor back in and then tring to figure out why the engine will not start up

I do not expect you to believe this but I saw a 1936 Chevy drive under its own power right in front of the big window of this old service station that we were useing as a tune up shop.It was not running right the owner said.It was still running when I lifted the hood. When I took the Distributor cap off there was no rotor.I think he said they had to push it to get it going.CENTAUR

I bought a car for $100 that did not run. The guy said he tuned it up and it wouldn't start. I looked in the bag in the pass floorboard and found 1 old cap, 4 old plugs, 1 old rotor button, and one new rotor button. I put the new one in and drove it away.

The throwout bearing was a pisser... Back together now, though.

Let's go Mountaineers
