I have a tractor to park and tarp over the winter. It will be outside on a sloped piece of ground. What is the best way to leave the tranny :
1. in reverse with no wheels blocked, load on tranny
2. in neutral with wheels blocked
3. in neutral with brakes locked on
4. in reverse, wheels blocked, load on tranny
5. in reverse, wheels blocked, no load on tranny
6. other??
Also, should the whole tractor be placed on blocks?

Thanks

I have bought but not been able to use it yet as my JD 2040 is out of state but have read in sports car forums that this smart charger is one of the best.

Doug, If I were you I wouldn"t tarp it unless there is no wind. otherwise, you will get places where the tarp wears your paint.

Something else to think about ? If you don't block the clutch pedal down it may stick as well. I don't have any good answers as to leaving them outside except DON'T.

We don"t have a great problem of clutches sticking but something to consider, so perhaps if you need to wedge the clutch pedal and leave the brakes off you need to find some flat ground. Maybe wet discs anyway and no problem there?
BTW, is this on the top of a mound? Must be enough space somewhere to turn it along the slope to leave it safe.

If it were mine, and I was real particular, then I'd change the engine oil, grease it up, check the cooling system.... Then park it, in low gear. Don't set the brakes. I might disconnect the battery cable. I probably would not. I've left them sit just like Allan's for a couple months on end, depending on what use I had for one.

Actually, I just recommisioned an old highway tractor on the weekend. She sat where she was parked for 2 years with a twisted frame. It got parked there the first week of December, '04. I was so disgusted, I just got out and left it. Scrap. Checked nothing.

Checked the oil and antifreeze the other day, put her on the block heater, cleaned all the cable connections and stuck 2 new batteries in the box, and another big set of booster cables bolted to the other truck to help. Fill the fuel filter(Cummins) and dump 5 gallons in the saddle tank.... crank and off she went. This just went too good. Had to try the clutch. Oh boy, it's not stuck. Try the gears. Yep, they all work. Got some air up, release the maxi's... Well, only 2 drums are stuck. Lock the power divider and tug.... Rocked her about 5 times back and forth, and the drums released. What the heck, I'm going for a joyride..... Mind you, this old junk sat for 2 years without so much as being turned over.

I think some people overthink the storage part of old tractors. I wouldn't exactly recomend what I did to that old truck.... but for a short period of time, it'll be just fine all by it's lonesome. Just cover the exhaust so it doesn't get water in, and make sure the antifreeze is up to par for your climate. Check all the fluid levels before you recommision the thing.

Here in Virginia half the diesel tractors don't need batteries just roll them off a hill.Biggest problem baling hay is run away bales.

Hey Walter, how are you this fine day. I had a cousin that was raised in Texas she married a farmer from Connersville, Indiana. The first time Chuck was here for a few days he kept saying how do you farm in these rocks. About the third day my uncle said well Chuck what on earth do you scotch your wagons with.

And MO is the only place I know where you can get chiggers wearing boots and never step off the blacktop. You have a nice state and I am looking forward to Red Power in 2008. I'll bring my own blocks.

If its anything like my parents 135, go down to the docks and get ya an anchor. A big one. Darned thing has rolled off a couple of times now. No operator fault, no sir. Well maybe sorta,...

I would leave it in gear and block the tires for safety. Locking the brakes could cause problems if ya need it in the winter. Rust could also set in.

Heck move it a couple of times if it makes ya feel better.

i would leave it in neutral, brakes unlocked. raise the tire pressure up to 25 psi or so so you wont get a flat spot. park it on some pieces of plywood so the tires dont sit on the dirt, chock the wheels so it dont roll down the hill. maybe spray some fogging oil in the carb with the engine running to coat the inside of the motor.

Dunno,

I've heard that ya have to always bring 'em in the house, place 'em close to the fireplace and spoon feed with hot cereal all winter long so they don't catch a cold 'er somethin'. :>)
