OT....Kick down on 700R4

I am finishing putting a 350 crate motor in my 86 K10. I added a high rise intake and an Edelbrock carburetor....now I am having trouble getting the kick down cable to the transmission (700R4) adjusted right. I don't want to burn the transmission up, are there any ways to set this other than trial and error? So far I love the power that the 350 has over the stock 305 that I took out, but this cable worries me. Any help would be appreciated. I'm off all this week...all I need to finish this is the cable and the exhaust. Mike

Thanks guys, I think I understand. Yes, the geometry probably is all screwed, and I'll have to try to straighten that out first. After that I'll work on the adjustment.

Thanks again. Mike

Mike,

I'll recap what the other fellas said and add my own twist to the soup.

Make sure the cable end is "snapped" over the button on the carburetor and completely seated.

Then, on the cable housing, push the button and shove the outer sheath of the cable rearwards. Push it all the way back until it seats and is flush with the housing.

Let up on the button, and with the secondary air valves held open, rotate the throttle linkage to the wide-open throttle position. This will "ratchet" the cable forward out of it's sheath. Pull it ONE MORE CLICK or one more tooth from wide open.

This will put the throttle valve at the proper position in it's bore.

If you cannot do any of these steps, you've got the mounting geometry messed up like Bob says and you'll have to get it back into the proper position in relation to the carb before you can properly adjust the cable.

Hope this helps,

Allan

It is a "TV" (throttle valve) cable, NOT simply a kickdown cable, like the older THM-350's had.

Not only is the adjusted length important, the "geometry" of the lever on the carburetor is critical... it's effective length, and it's angular position the the TV cable.

Since you have changed out the carburetor and the intake, the correct geometrical relationship of the linkage may no longer exist.

Some years ago, Car Craft had a good short article on how to make this all work. I lost the link in a computer crash, perhaps someone else has it.

If you don't get it right, the transmission line pressure won't build up as needed, with the increased torque, as the gas pedal is mashed down, and the tranny clutches will go up in smoke.

Hopefully, someone can point you to the diagram I am referring to, or something similar, so you can verify your setup is correct, or you can correct it as needed.

I'll add one thing to JMB's reply.
It's best to open the throttle right at the carb as the throttle linkage might not open carb all the way.

Usually the cable sheath has a button where it mounts to the carb. (engine off) You push the button (push hard)and the cable sheath will pop back, then open throttle wide open (floor the gas pedal) and the cable will ratchet to proper setting.
