I"m at my wits end here, I had a guy replace the head gasgets on my wifes garage sale wagon. $650 later it is worse than when he started. I need to get this thing out of my shop. As far as I know the head gasgets are ok but this thing don"t wanna run or should say stay running. I have.... Put in a new pick-up coil and ign. control modual in the distributor. New spark plugs and wires, just in case. Re-adjusted the valves Checked the compression and its at 140 to 150 lbs per cld. This is where I get lost and need help. It is a throttle body carb and it will not spray enough gas to make it run. It has 10-11 lbs fuel pressure. Is this the ECM bad or what and for that matter how would I know. It never has shown any service lights, warnings and each time I do anything to it I reset the ECM by disconecting the battery. Any imput appreciated, Richard

Are you sure you used the correct cylinder to set the timing? It used to always be the front drivers side but on some cars it's the front passenger side!

Since the heads have been off, about the first thing I would look for is a ground wire that didn't get hooked back up onto a stud in one of the heads, or the intake manifold. There are a number of grounds that the computer uses to get an accurate ground reference when reading a number of sensors.

Also, if the coolant temperature sensor got damaged, or is not connected, the 'puter won't have an accurate reading of the engine temperature, which it uses to compute the amount of fuel to inject, MORE when the engine is cold, the electronic version of the old-fashioned choke.

Also, there MAY be an "charge air temperature sensor" in the air cleaner or ductwork that contributes a temperature figure to the 'puter, which uses it while calculating how much fuel to inject.

You really need to have a talk with the 'puter, using a scan tool, to see what it's upset about!

As usual Bob good answers, here is a little more info. At first it would at least start and was getting a heavy shower of fuel but to set the timing it has to be warmed up; first I set the timing to get the best vacuum at 22 lbs. took the gauge off and set the timing with my light. Things went south after that. It is like it is stuck in the warm position, I even let it sit all night in the shop with the heat off so it would deliver more fuel for cold start (choke). I only find two coolant sensors, is the one I"m looking for on the intake next to the thermostat? Thanks for your time Richard

My GUESS is that's the sensor... I haven't been under the hoods of many full-size RWD card that new.

You really need to get a scan tool on it, and see what temp the 'puter thinks the engine and charge air actually are, as if there's a wiring or ground problem, the sensor will be good, but the 'puter will be computing the wrong temp, and using it in fuel map selection.

Taking a quick peek with a scan tool will quickly show if this temp sensor thing has any merit, or rule it out, so you can look elsewhere.

I"m off to get a new sensor tester, I would not be surprised if the ICM I put in the dist. is junk, guess where it was made....mex. I will make a new post to let you know how it comes out.
Thanks again, Richard

You might check for a cracked manifold or a vacumm leak.
