Had to go to the V.A. hospital today for my once a year check up. All went good there and all is good with me. Took off to come back home and the timing belt broke on my Geo tracker that I was driveing. Called home for help and had to wait 3 or 4 hours for my truck and trailor to come pick me up. Wasn't to bad till it got dark then I about frooze my butt off. Well at least I made it back home some 12-13 hours after I left this morning. What a long tiring day and now I get to fix the timing belt, not to bad since its been about 10 years since I replace it

I have a 95 sidekick with the 1.6 16 valve engine, i don't know if these are interferance engines or not but while you have the timing belt off it seems to me like it isn't hard to change the cam and crank seals, you might want to check it out. mine has 275,000+ miles on it. last december i blew a head gasket when the radiater cracked, heat just barely got into the red b4 it was shut off. good luck with yours.

I know how ya feel. Started the other day off by falling over a pallet at work and splitting the palm of my left hand open in two gashes and ended the same day by splitting the radiator on my car. Also several small incidents throughout the day. Somdays just aren't work anything.

Gosh Old, hope you have better luck than did I with my Toyota when I broke a timing belt. Piston hit and bent a valve.

Been driving Detroit iron since.

This is the second time it has done that to me and the last time it didn't bend a vlave so I'm pretty sure its going to be ok again this time. I didn't here any thing either it just died on me almost like I had turn off the key.

I"ve read a lot of your postings, but haven"t had a direct question for you, but now you"ve gotten my curiosity up. How bad is it to change the timing belt? I got a tracker 1994, with the 1.6 litre ( I think ). How many miles did you get on that belt? Is it an interference engine? I know, it"s a lot of questions, but I"d rather learn than experience a blown belt. Thanks in advance, Dennis.

The last time I replaced the belt was 8-10 years ago. The tracker I have has an oil leak that puts some oil on the belt so that probably doesn't help it either. As far as how many miles I don't know for sure I haven't kept track of that. The belts not all the bad to put on if I remember right. Last time I did it I think I pulled the radaitor off so I could see the crankshaft and cam at the same time to line the belt/timing up. I think 8-10 years on a belts not all that bad since this thing sits a lot and its out in the weather all the time also. I also may luck out and find that the belt has/had a life time warrenty on it, I buy stuff like that when ever I can so I can get new for free

Just a note. On the vehicles I have with timing belts (Volvo, BMW, Honda) the manuals all say 70K to 90K miles change the belts. The volvo is a non-interference engine ut the BMW is interference--i.e. don't let the BMW break a belt.
