A friend and I happened to be "out-and-about" yesterday and found 3 fields of turnips. One is about 20 acres, but the other two are 70-80 acres each. We found several that were as big as a volleyball! Measured one at 20 1/4" around. They are all for cattle feed. They will be turned out on them later. TONS of good eating there!

Do they just feed/graze the tops or do they also feed the root? If they feed the root, is it cut up or what? I have read that farmers fed turnips back when but I don't know anyone who does now.

They just turn to cattle loose! They will "root up" the turnips themselves (and eat the greens also). The guy who owned one of the fields said that thier noses will be black from all the digging they do to get the turnips. I have fed some turnips to my goats and I cut them up so it is easier for them to eat. My wife's dad plants a bucnh for his goats (nothing close to this amount, though!). He stores them in a root celler and cuts up a few every other day or so. They keep most of the winter.

My dad told of planting a small field of Jerusalem Artichokes (a root crop- don't know much more about them)- turned several pigs out into them when mature, and the pigs rooted around and ate them- everything fine until the pigs all died, without any real symptoms, within a few days of each other. Posted them and found their guts full of sand and dirt. Hope the cows are a little daintier eaters. . .

My ubcle planted some turnip seed years ago along with the rye grass. They were so large it only took 5 to make a dozen.

I thought a Mangle was closer looking to a beet - these are purple and white, like a regular turnip.

I am gonna see if I can talk to him tomorrow. He's busy with harvest, so it might take a few days to get ahold of him. I'd like to find out myself!
