Ford F-350 Engine Cutting Out

I have a 2003 Ford F-350 with a 6.0 liter diesel engine. Since it has begun to turn cold, it will crank up okay, but when I begin to drive it while the engine is still cold, the engine wants to spit and sputter and not go pick up like it should. I live in Florida and it is not that cold. This is dangerous where I live and have to pull out on the highway into fast moving traffic. Once the temperature of the engine warms up, I have no trouble with it spitting and sputtering and it runs normal.

I took it to the diesel shop about a week ago and they could not find anything wrong with it; they did not run it when it was cold.

Does anyone know what is the matter and what the corrective action may be?

Thanks

Bill, That engine should still be under warranty. Take it to the dealer to have it checked out. There are updates and recalls on this engine that may need to be done to yours. Even if you bought the truck second hand, the warranty will still be good. Hope this helps.

Hi Bill,

I have the 7.3 and it does the same thru the CAP (cold air package) or the engine pre-heating cycle that keeps the wastegate fully open until warm. The 6.0 works slightly different but close enough to be the same pain.

Mine takes about 4 miles of driving before it has full power. Could you let the engine preheat for a couple minutes if you can't wait to get upto hi-way speeds?

The 2003s are especially notorious being nothing but problems. Ford replaced thousands of those engines while kicking and screaming over every one. Lots of electronic and injector issues. Make sure you are checking your oil daily - if its over full you have leaky injectors. More then one owner has found a COUPLE extra GALLONS of deisel in the oil pan.

I would have a Ford dealer check it out, those 6.0's have a bunch of recalls and TSB's on them, the dealer should be able to see what has been done and what needs to be done.
