There used to be a big rock on top of one of my hills on the farm. Awhile back it was removed. A few weeks ago I was digging around the hole, getting ready to fill it in with rocks. I found an old metal box buried beside where the rock was. Inside I found some old coins, an old wrench, a few other items and a couple letters written in German from the mid 1800's. These might have been from my Great-Great-Great Grandfather written to his son in the USA. Any idea how to get them translated? I THINK they might be in what was called "Low German".

Now wait a minute.I have worked for a company that preserves historical items for years and any box, even metal, buried as you say would itself be deteorated rather badly and any paper objects inside would have decomposed past legibility. unless they were hermetically sealed in a mason jar on funk and wagnels porch. I myself doubt any such items exist except in your imagination like some of your previous posts. If you reply let's see some pictures of the items like the pics of your tractor.

Well - if you recall - I said that the letters were FROM the mid 1800's, not BURIED in the 1800's.
Since this parcel of land has only been in the family since about 1947 - the box has probably been in the ground a realitivley short time. Didn't find a treasure, just a couple letters, coins and other small stuff. The translation is underway by someone on this board as we speak. I took them to a couple of local people, but one was 93 and said her eyesigth was to the point she coundn't read them. Since you are versed in the field, why not lend a hand at the translation, instead of rushing to judgment?

no...go ahead and post them. I'm sure there several people that would like to see if they are real. That way they would also be in color.I know if you can post tractor pictures in a snap it won't be hard for you to get them right up.

An expert such as you should be willing to look at things personally, but since you won't give me your fax and have no e-mail showing, I guess you're gonna have to come on out and see them for yourself! I already have the letters being translated so I don't need your help. Stop on by, just leave your dog at home.

What's the matter?? got caught in another story and that is the best you can come up with for an excuse???? If you really have something that you are willing to fax for someone to see or trapes around showing it to various people there is no excuse not to post it, other than you have nothing. unless you can come up with another really, really good excuse for not posting a picture of your letter, coins and tool, let me make it easy for you...Google "German Letters",old coins, old tools and I bet someone as good as you can find a picture of something to post that you could pass of for what you are sussposed to have. And could you hurry a little, the whistle is about to go and my shift is over. Patiently waiting for a photo,Thank you!

HAHAHAHA! Nice story! I actually have a whole box (probably 20-30) letters that were written in the 1800's and early 1900's. I even have the original deed to my GGGrandfathers place it Marthasville MO. These letters will fit right in with them. Doesn't matter to me if you don't believe me. Those people who are important and willing to help know about them - you just don't matter enough!

You can also check with your county courthouse. They have, or are able to put you in touch with someone who speaks German or any other language. They are required to have a transleter for courts in all language.

The Alta Vista search engine has a program called Babel fish or something similiar. It is pretty easy to use if I remember correctly.

My farther can both read and speak german. But I know your not close to me so thats no help. You might check your local school system and see if they have a german teacher if they do then you could probably get them tranlated that way

It is amazing what is burried, and will never be discovered. I was digging a corner post a few years back near a old stage coach stop, was down about 2 ft, and found a small fork fourged out of one piece of steel. It may have been used in a garden to loosen up soil. Stan

Hi, from time to time, my family still speaks low german, came from Germany in the early 1900. My grandmother - 93 yrs young can probably translate them for you.
If you are interested. Can you scan them to me or just type into the email?
