Does anyone know what was the most powerful production two wheel drive tractor is or was? Could it be the Massey 2805?

Hi Guys Thanks for all the replys, it was an interesting question. I suppose I should have said any 2 wheel drive diesel up to 1980. Anyway as I own a 2805 how can I easily get it past the 200hp that one or two of the others are being quoted as having or being adjusted to with relative ease? Can this be done with the old Massey or will she just explode?

The highest I have ever seen in a moderen 2wd is 200hp. The 200hp JD 4960 was availible in 2wd. Also the 8870 Ford/New Holland was availible in 2wd, and the factory specs say 180hp, but the motors in those can easily run 300hp with the turn of a screw driver, and I think most came with alot more power than they were supposed to like the 8970 did. The best about the 8870 is full powershift. Other 180hp tractors would include the Allis Chalmers 7080, the White 2-180 and the International 5488. The John Deere 6030 is rated for 175hp but they are built so rugged that they could take 300hp as well. The problem with all these high horsepower 2wd tractors is you can't really get the power out of them to the ground in most situations.

Near as I can tell, that distinction goes to Deere with the 4960 right at 200 PTO HP. However, there were several others in the 185-195 PTO HP category, including CaseIH, White, and Agco-Allis and Massey.

The Case IH Magnum series had some powerful tractors. The late model 1st generation MX series had 2wd tractors.

I am pretty sure allis had it when the 7080 came out, but it has been passed since then by several other tractors. 181 PTO hp is pretty impressive for a tractor that only has 426 cubic inches of displacement though.

This got me curious so I did some quick looking in my library. I found that you could have ordered a Deere 8310 or a Case 8940 in a 2wd configuration and they both were rated at 205 pto hp. It would appear that neither company offers a tractor that large with out mfd any longer. I didnt have any info on other companies. bill

I should have said Honey Bee, I misplaced it with the Chamberlains because of both being painted yellow. At 500HP this Honey Bee is quite massive... Link

The ole Oliver 2255 comes to mind. It"s not the highest, but with a Cat V8 it does look good with valve covers hanging out the side (like the MF right?) I think PTO hp is 147 or so, but could it be more? I blew right through a small dyno that topped at 140hp and mine is even tired I think.

The Nebraska test on the 2255 was right at the 147 that yours tested.

The Chamberlain built down under are pretty massive, I don't know about horsepower, I would have to research that. Are you limiting your question to North America or otherwise?

Iteresting question. I plan on owning the biggest two wheel drive tractors of all makes built in the 1974 to 1977 range. I have a Case {Sprit of 76] 1570, and a JD 6030 now. What a most unusual collection it will/may be! What year or years does your question ask for an answer.

Clever idea. I sure didn't think of steam power when I saw this post, but I think I'll agree with you.

Good point Don

Todays tractors are probably available in 2wh and go above 200 horse.

The book I have only covers thru 1984.

A Nebraska test book I have has the following tractors as listed-

2805 Massey at 181 PTO

6030 JD at 176 PTO

2590 Case at 180.5 PTO

5488 IH at 187.2 PTO

Their may be higher ones but those are the ones I checked out.

If anyone thinks their is one higher, give me the model and if it was tested I'll look it up.

The 6020 JD was not tested.
