My 1941 Ford 9N is VERY difficult to steer. I just assumed that an old tractor would give you a good workout when turning it, but a local contractor in my area who drove it said that it shouldn"t be that difficult to turn. Has anyone experienced difficulty with steering their 9N and is there a typical fix?

My 8N has also become very hard to steer lately. It has been sitting outside with a tarp over it and so I thought that it was protected. After some research I found that many of the original steering boxes were poorly designed for lubrication, so I found a plug on my steering box and promptly installed a grease fitting. When I pumped the grease in I couldn't believe the amount of water that was pushed up and out at the steering wheel! It steers much better but not 100% so there must be some damage internally as well as some water still there. I'll live with it for now.
Hope this helps.

King pins, wheel bearings, tyre pressures, tracking, steering joints, steering box. All can be resonsible, or partly thus.
Check with weight removed from front wheels. If steering is free, likely that problem is at front axle.

Make sure that all of joints are free and greased to begin with. If it is still stiff, pull the cover and see what the grease looks like. Last, make sure the steering column is not trying to seize in the bushings.

If it just the steering joints that are rusty and stiff take the time to fix them or will have the steering gears jumping in the box. Then things get tougher.

If the steering tends to fall or pull to one side, check the Toe-in setting. If it wobbles when going down the road or lane, it might need king-pin bushings. Another thing to check is for loose tie-rod ends-by loose, i mean they wobble, or flop around, if you disconnect them from their normal connections. Also, "play" in the steering box can give lots of steering problems, too. Being that i can't see the tractor, i am giving you this info so you know what to check! I worked on Ford N tractors many years ago, at the local Ford tractor dealer. Also on the Ford cars of the 30's and 40's.
