I have excessive blow by on my 165. It will get rebuilt next summer but in the meantime can I reduce this by some method. What about an oil additive to reduce blow by, are they effective, or can we somehow pipe the blow by into the air intake?

Yes, you can lower blowby for at least a little while by adding enough STP or similar product, if it is not a cracked liner or head gasket leak. When I was in my early teens, a friend had an old 56 Chevy with an oil burning, blowby spewing 265 small block. He added 5-6 cans of STP and it stopped burning oil and blowby went by-by. Lasted for about two weeks. It gummed everything up so bad, that you stopped to add oil every 5 miles and the blowby was so terrible that you could barely see to drive. Couldn't really tell what it was when he first came down the road. Until he pulled in the driveway we thought the county had bought a mosquito fogger.

Steve,

Hate to tell you this, but an overhaul is the only way.
Most of the so called remedies out there are nothing more than snake oil. Just keep checking the oil regularily and run it until your ready to overhaul it.

Thanks Beck, I will get to that overhaul eventually. The smoke from the blow by is intermittant only happening about one third of the time fairly regularly, either working or at idle. I"m guessing rings are the culprit?

My 65 diesel had alot of blowby when I bought it. Like you, I figured it was worn rings. One day about 3 years later, it started blowing antifreeze out of the radiator. When I tore it down, I found 2 sleeves cracked near the top and the head gasket blown from the cylinder to an oil passage and finally to the water jacket.

Steve,

Not questioning your diagnosis, but you do know that these old tractors normally have a certain amount of blow by, don't ya? Especially if it is a diesel.

I've got a brand new engine in my 9 with less than 100 hours on it. Blow by up the ying-yang by today's standards. It is how they breathe and it has simply got to be there.

It suddenly got worse about a year ago and is more than just normal blow by. Not a lot of oil pouring out just dripping but lots of smokey foul smelling fumes
