I have a buddy with a ford 5000 row crop and the power steering leaks and after setting about a month it drained out . He filled it but still has no steering . I figgered the pump is not picking up or the system needs bleed of air but I dont want to start foolin with another mans tractor without a good idea what to look for . All other hyd. work fine and it`s a gas model . Is there any help out there ?? and thanks if there is .

"6X" series tractors (2,3,4,5000) had two styles of power steering. Mar. 1968 and older had the resevoir above the pump connected to it by hoses. Apr."68 and newer had the pump integral with the resevoir. As long as it was empty was the perfect time to change the filter, becuase if it"s like most we had come in, the fiter has never been changed. The filter for the new style (from New Holland) will come with a new o-ring for between resevoir and pump body. The hoses on the old style probably won"t come to $10 so if it"s that style change them as well.

When you say he filled it up were you there? The reason I ask is that it’s hard to believe it drained dry but its possible. If it were dry he would have to fill the reservoir several times probably before getting the air out of the system. Good luck..... ....

Yes the other hydraulics will be fine the PS on the 5000 has it's own resivoir in the PS pump housing.
Where does it leak out from ? Like you I suspect it is a trapped air problem. But am at a loss as to tell you how to proceed as I have never had this problem.
