Somehow that thread got into politics - fiesty bunch here! But back to tractors - I heard that some of the europoen tractors have bigger hydraulic pumps - relatively small tractors, high horsepower, but set up for using a lot of attachments - rototillers for example. Did you see any of the front mounted stuff working? I want to go over there myself some day. My parents went last year, and they loved it.

When you buy a new John Deere (ha ha who has that kind of money) you can get a front 3 point hitch and a front PTO as an option.

Around here we used to sell a lot of European tractors, and still sell one line of them, they tend to be a bit cheaper for the small farmers that are looking for something newer on a tighter budget, the majority of them tend to be more basic in design, for example Landini, Zetor, Universal, Valtra,as a rule they run smaller hydraulic pumps than North America, now, there are exceptions too, take a Fendt for example, pretty Hi-Tech piece of stuff, just as a note, several of them have great fuel economy for the horsepower Front hitches are popular in Europe, but are beginning to make decent inroads here as well, push a 15 foot discbine and pull another 15 footer with a row merger on it for a 30 foot cut in a single pass, makes a 100acre field look small with that thing

Field tractors there travel up to 40MPH and are used as transportation and highway trailer towing. Around here the shop boys took a JCB which had been sitting on the used lot out for a tour. They caught a blast of verbal warning from the cops to quit passing cars with a tractor.

Wasn't the Friday tractor sort of the same idea - 40 mph+ back in the 40's?

Just guessing here but how about this? Over here the farmers have a fleet of tractors to do any number of chores. You go into any farm yard and see what I mean. Over there I believe they are much more restricted for various reasons and rely on just one tractor to do the work. So it would stand to reason that the one tractor they have must be capable of doing multiple chores well.
