I heard talk on the news that the mayor of Detroit and some developer are planning to build some low income housing in Detroit. One of the building and area is the old Ferguson Tractor Works, and Continetal Engine Co. These buildings take up about 3 square miles. The water tower is still Ferguson Grey and the foundry stack says Continetal. This complex is located on Jefferson Ave. and follows Conner Ave. To Kercheval Ave. Big area that place must have housed alot of workers, seems to me we used to have alot of jobs in Michigan years ago, and now very few. But i will get some pics and put them on the Forum before the wrecking ball gets to them.

I knew Massey Ferguson was on the west side = just off 96. I never heard of the "Ferguson works", but i am a west sider. TheMassey complex off 96 was in use into the 80's. I think for a long time they did machining work there, trans and heavy gears. Few outsiders know this, but Detroit was always split between east and west sides. To me, anything east of woodward might as well been on the moon.

"...seems to me we used to have a lot of jobs in Michigan years ago, and now very few..."...uhhhh, yeah...look, with all due respect, you gotta get out of those turkey barns more, turn on the radio news, watch some TV news, maybe even (gasp!) read a newspaper...there"s been things going on, like "cheaper labor overseas" "no labor laws, no pollution controls, no safety laws overseas". CEO"s"ve been telling their boards: Hey, we make money here, but if we send the work overseas and still sell at US prices, we"cn make a ton of money, and by the time there"s no one left in the US making enough money to buy the stuff, we"ll all be so rich it won"t matter". Stuff like that. How"s the market for turkeys coming along? Any coming in from Malaysia or Bangladesh yet?? (All meant in a spirit of fun, except it really isn"t funny).
