We have a year old white shepherd that is driving us nuts. Darned thing CONSTANTLY runs in circles as fast as he can run....around the house, the barn, every tree on the place, every outbuilding, every vehicle, every plant or berry bush, even the chickens & turkeys. He tries around each cow but they still have their horns and they don't like it, they've gored him a couple of times already. It's so ridiculous there are paths worn down to dirt around everything. Anyone ever seen a dog do this before? I've had labs and huskies and shepherd/husky crosses all my life and they all love to run, but I've never seen anything like this.

Don"t have an answer about your Shepard, but my friend"s wife had a Sheltie that would spin madly in circles every time the dishwasher or oven was opened.... We figured she had a screw loose - (the dog, that is.) Her vet never was able to shed any light on the behavior either.

One in my neighborhood does laps around his fence perimeter very time I walk by with my dogs.

We have been raising German Shepherds as a hobby for many years and have placed many as handicapped assist dogs and as K-9 dogs with police units across Iowa. We have one female, she is 7 years old, who happens to be pure white and she also constantly runs in circles too. It doesn't matter if we have her in a small pen or a huge 50 x 50 one, she still runs the perimeter. She is not agressive and loves to play but seems to be wound up different than our other dogs, even her aunt (who is solid black by the way). We checked into this a few years back and found a couple other people with white shepherds and theirs also run in circles. One vet told us this is because shepherds are herding dogs and are used to circling the livestock they are guarding, constantly on alert for predators. Sounds plausible but why does our white one do it and none of the other 6 we have? Kind of an odd coincidence.

Every dog is has it's own personality :)

I currently have three Dalmatians.

Two are complete and utter couch potatoes, despite their reputation for being "high energy".

Jake was my problem child before I found the right trainer (and a Halti halter collar!). I would've never called him hyper...

But he was athletic (darn dog would jump into the back of pickup...with the tail gate up!). And very, very impulsive -- I'm going down the road one day, he jumped out the window to go chase a turkey in the woods.

Now that Jake and I are both trained, he's soooo much more under control -- about the time he thinks about going to eat that Chihuaha, he just sighs and puts himself in a SIT because he knows I'll do it otherwise :)

Really quite simple: One good turn deserves another.

Neighbor's shepard. Very hyper, and not at all a friendly dog to anyone or anything but them. Constantly running in tight circles non-stop, except down the fence a ways, then back and all over again, barking and growling at anyone and anything that moves. Just about a year old.

I work out of state and get home late Friday nights. Not long ago, got home and my family told me that the couple got caught out of town over night and called to ask if I'd go over and make sure that had enough water. I was gonna just walk over across the fields and do it right then before I had a late night dinner, but it was about 10 and my family talked me out of it. Next morning I walked over and let myself in the fenced yard, and it was in its kennel. The second it saw me, began trying to chew its way through the chainlink and leaping at the gate to get at me. Good thing the gates latched at both the top and bottom and is chainlink over the top too or at 6'2" and 240, I'd been hamburger. I drug the hose over from the hydrant and the whole time I tried to get water to it, it chewed at its huge steel water dish, the water, the chainlink, and if it could've... me too. Didn't bother me much to close it all up and mosey on back across the fields. None of my dogs have never been like that, none ever will. I'm a dog lover, but not that one.

Mark

Sounds like congress.

Give him a couple of years and he'll be fine. He's got a lot of puppy trying to come out of a dog's body. Lucky for you both he has a place he can run rather than chew.

CAREFUL! Dr Dolittle's GOTTA be a quack - he don't know the difference between a "cat" scan and a "dog" scan!

Lady walks into my office with a flattened duck and asks if its dead. "Yep" I says. She says "are you sure?" I call in my Labrador Retreiver who sniffs the duck head to toe, hangs his head, whimpers and leaves the room. Next comes my Siamese who places a paw on the ducks chest, yawls sadly and leaves. "Sure enough it's dead" the lady says. "That'll be $150" I said. She protests "$150 to tell me my duck is dead?". I reply "would have been $50 but You insisted on lab work and a cat scan!"
