Been building a MH 30 from a pair of dead ones and have it running now. But the govanor hunts and it sits and goes voom, voom and will not steady out. Open close open etc. Well I pull the carb off today to let it soak figureing on that being the problem. Well when I opened it up guess what. There was no gasket in between the halfs of the carb and the little brass cone thing not sure whats its call wasn't there. I'm luck I have junk carbs laying around for the one missing piece. So now the question. Is that why the govanor was hunting?? And why in the world would some one leave out those parts??
Thanks

I have an Alice G that did the same thing after I cleaned the carb! I disassembled the carburetor and soaked it in carb cleaner. When I took it apart I found that there was a small piece of wire stuck through the main jet! I of course removed the wire when I put the carb back together but I couldn’t get the engine to run properly. At partial throttle it would Gallup as you noted. I tried everything. Finally took the carb back apart and put the piece of wire back in the main jet. It ran fine then!

I seem the remember years ago that my dad had the problem with the tractor wanting to Gallup all the time. He must have fixed it with the wire!

The engine must have run too rich with a probably worn fuel jet. The wire closed it off enough to lean it out properly.

Regards
Gary

The absence of a gasket could easily create a vacuum leak. The brass cone thing is probably the venturi, they don't run very good with that piece missing. I don't know too much about a Massey governor, but you possibly could have a weak spring in there or maybe the fly weights are hanging up?

Aloha, Yes, that could have been the problem. It probably created a great vacuum leak and he probably lost the gasket or couldn't get a replacement.

Hey Old, I would put in another gasket and replace missing parts, See how she runs then. there could be a number of reasons that those parts aren't there. Was at the auto parts store and a gentleman was upset because he couldn't understand why they would not let him swap him out another carb. because he washed out the one he had just got from them with lemon joy and water.
