Hi, I have a small patch of Wheat in Indiana that we will combine in early July. I wondered about planting some pumpkins by hand into the wheat as it was growing.

I need to know if you think this will work:

In early May when the wheat is 10 inches tall, I would spot spray with roundup - circles about 18 inches in diameter to kill the wheat. Then dig up with showel and plant pumpkins seeds every 7-8 feet apart in rows 10 feet apart. Planting in early -mid June. Then in early July just drive the combine over the hills of pumpkins....I dont think the plants will have spread out too far before combining so it should pass right over. I will use the wheat straw as a mulch to keep weeds down and spot spray as necessary.

What do you think about this double/intercrop method? I need to plant pumpkins, but dont have the bare ground to do it.

Also, what is the going rate for wholesale pumpkins per lb?

Now that is multi tasking.
Flying a plane while holding a camera in one hand and a pumpkin in the other.

So that’s why crop dusters always look like they are ready to crash at any moment.

Last year I planted pumpkins in June and wound up with the whole crop ready at the end of Sept. Then I had a little trouble keeping them all from rotting in the 100' temps. Also it was kind of Weird all of the pumpkins were very small(6"-8") like mini-pumpkins. I also tried the "Big Max" variety and they all rotted on the vine. Any suggestions?

Phil,

Your comment about the vines growing fast is quite true. I grew up in Indiana and tried raising watermelons once back in the '50s. The melons developed very well, but the vines grew so fast that they wore out the melon rinds by dragging them along the ground. Melons lost all their juice and weren't too good.

Well you shoulda done what we do, make a four wheeled dolly for each melon, then train the vine to grow toward the back porch. Works very well.

Sid,

It's obvious that you are a lot younger and more educated than we were back in the day. Wheels were not that common yet in our area...LOL!

Although we did have a 1943 John Deere B and a 1949 JD A by that time, Dad still preferred his trusty Percheron horses. We used them up until 1956, and it broke his heart when he finally sold them.

I have seen pumpkins no-til planted into killed rye cover crop. There seems to be success with this method. Your idea may work as long as the pumpkin vines didn't get too big. They grow fast once they get a good start.
