I get a call from my son-in-law tonight after dark. He said while turning his truck in to the drive way, he hears a clunk noise, and now the power stearing doesn't work. He said it turns hard now. Do these pumps have a problem, or Maybe it's not pump related. I guess I will drive out to his place tomorrow, and take a look. Thanks for any help. Stan

Hi 37 chief. I have an update for you. My boy just stopped in,i told him about your problem. When his truck was new,15000 miles, the front end and steering got to popping, clunking, jumping, shaking, steering hard. He took it to the dealer and it had two teeth broken off of the power steering pump. I had forgotten that. Sounds something like yours. That was an outer u-joint that went bad on it. When i was turning the rotar i could see the axle moving out of center. I forgot but he said you could grab the rotar and shake the joint. Hope this helps. Charley.

Take the belt off and make sure the shaft did not fracture

hi. i have 99 two wheel,my son has 98 4x4. well over 100,000 and no power steering problems. a clunk when turning sounds like outer u-joint.my boys was making noises driving down the street, vibrating, clunking when you turned it. he had to have a new u-joint and the seal was leaking some. the leak got worse and take it apart again in put in new seal. do both at the same time. jack it up,take off the wheel and turn rotar by hand and watch end of axle. if joint is bad you can see it move, turn out of round, off center. we know a dodge dealer mechanic that does work at home, got buy a lot cheaper. hope this helps. charley.

" turn rotar by hand and watch end of axle. if joint is bad you can see it move, turn out of round, off center. "

Actually you won't. The splined end of the axle shaft has a shoulder that meets the inner wheel bearing race on the inside and a big nut (mine's 1 3/8", yours may be +/- a little depending on 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton)that tightens against the inner wheel bearing race on the outside. This will keep it turning true even if the u-joint in the axleshaft is in very bad condition. If you see that axle shaft turning off-center, I'd suspect a bad wheel bearing.
