A little background info; I had a couple posts, a month or so ago, about my auto tranny in my F250 diesel acting up. I followed some advise, and changed what fluid I could and the filter. Couple days later, what I thought was a shutter came back. I finally got my truck in to have the tranny looked at. They put their computer on it, and went for a drive, said everything looked fine. The tech didn"t notice any slippage or anything else abnormal. I must be getting paranoid. The tech suggested, if I wanted to, to flush the tranny and use DexronIV instead of the Mercon/DexronIII, I just might do that. Good to know the trans. is ok. Now I can start looking for a good deal on a gooseneck hitch and a trailer later this summer. Thanks to everyone who helped me earlier. Rich

If you truck has a 2 piece driveshaft check it at the carrier bearing, some are out of aligement and need reshimed, hope this helps.

Don't assume you're paranoid. Changing the fluid doesn't always correct the trans shudder. If your truck is still under warranty, make sure you document the problem with Ford. Why? Good chance you will continue to have the problem and it will likely get worse.

My '97 had the shudder and the trans eventually went out and had to be rebuilt. Trans shudder is a common problem over several model years of the F-series trucks. I could make it shudder by driving at a very easy acceleration and at around 45mph it would do it for a couple of seconds. Would not do it under "normal" acceleration. (at least not how I drive!) Seems to me it was between 3rd & 4th gear.

Don't know which tranny you have, but for mine everyone said to stay with the MerconV.

Go to f150online (add the www and dot coms) and do a search on transmission shudder and read the various posts.

Unfortunately, my truck isn"t still under warranty. My truck is a 1996 Ford F250 with the 7.3L Powerstroke diesel, E40D auto tranny and 4wd. I might just save up a couple bucks and have them drop the tranny, take a look at the tourque converter and flush the tranny. The torque converter appears to be stock, even though the tranny was rebuilt before I bought the truck (why they didn"t mess with the converter, i don"t know). I might just bite the bullet and upgrade the converter now, before I need to rebuild the tranny. By the way, the truck had a snowplow mount on the front when I bought it.

I agree with the post bleow on fluids. I would just suggest you look at under bed type goose neck. Keeps the bed free of rails. I wish I had gone that way, and may change over yet.

Be careful changing fluids as some fluids can negatively impact the life of the friction materials.

A shutter in the transmission is usually indicative of a torque converter failure. It may or may not go into error mode in the early phases of the problem. If you change the fluid look for pieces of metal or friction material.

Good luck.

My 96 F-250 was real tough on torque converters. The tranny guy finally put in a much heavier one as he was getting tired of fixing it. He hated to see me pull up to his shop.
