I am writing a research paper on agriculture during the 1950's, and I'm trying to find as much information as I can on any 50's model tractors or equipment. Interested more in AC WD-45's and MM models, but any information would be helpful.

Brandon,

The first tractor book that I purchased while at Miss. State (MSU) was entitled "Farm Tractors 1950-1973" by Larsen. It records many Nebraska test results, tractor data, HP, engine size and other info during the 1950-1973 period, complete with B&W photos of each tractor tested. For each year covered, the book describes the "new technology" introduced by each manufacturer. Somehow I've managed to keep up with this book over the years and through several hurricanes and moves. If you can get a copy of this book I think you'll be in good shape for the info you're needing.

1953 was the year of the most changes in tractors,I think.Almost every manufacture announced a new model that year.AC WD 45 with live PTO,Deere models 50,60 & 70 with live PTO,MM with the UB, Ford Jubilee, Massey Harris 44 Special with live PTO,Farmall Super H & Super M, Oliver? not sure of change,Ferguson? TO 20& TO 30? Case DC?Eagle hitch?Co Op/Cockshutte--sp?( could not beleive they used that name when they changed the name) What am I leaving out? Before the decade was over Ferguson merged wIth Massey Harris and I think all manufacturers had live PTO,diesel engines and power steering .Plus much improved hydraulics and considerable more horsepower.Manufactures were also incorporating more creature comfort in their designs during that decade. The 50s was my favorite decade to have lived though.Drudgery was fading fast on the farm during those years.Combining corn in the last part of the decade was starting to be common place. So many new innovations in those years.

I"m not sure how detailed your research needs to be. An excellent resource for the Allis Chalmers would be the Norm Swinford book on the history of AC. It has a lot more information than you will need, but it certainly has everything to give you a good background on those tractors. I don"t know much about the MM"s. Tim
