We came into possesion (read got it CHEAP!) of a 21 ft wide Massey disc a couple of years ago. The biggest tractor that we have is an 856 IH Farmall. With the wings up, I think the disc is about 15 feet wide, but the thing is very heavy. With the wings up, the disc is a load on the 856. We have never run the disc with the wings down. At a bare minimum, how much horsepower do I need to pull a disc that size without blowing up the engine? Will a 4620 or 5020 do it?

The few times we hooked it up, we didn't have the duals on. Dad and I figured that the duals would help, but since we don't need duals for anything else, it wasn't worth it to put them on just to run the big disk for 2 weekends. But that disk can cut. One pass and you were ready to finish the ground and plant.

We mainly disk some heavier silt loam and gumbo type soils.

I wish we had the money for a new mfwd JD, but until we strike oil, our operation is profitable enough to buy one.

We pulled 20' Kewannee's with our 856 and 4020's. If the ground was hard, and we needed penetration, we left the wings up. They always pulled easier with the wings down. You might try it before you spend the money for a larger tractor. Duals are always a good idea too.

That's what I was thinkin'.

Dualed up, that tractor ought to handle that thing down in 4th, hadn't it? Unless he is farming some hill country?

In most soils a 18 ft disk would probably be enough for a stock 856.

I pull a 21 ft Krause in high 1st with a 1206 Farmall but it isnt stock.

A set of dual rear tires on the 856 will make a huge difference, but a 21 ft. disc in southwest Iowa would still be just about all a good 856 would want and still do a good job of disking.

I don't know what you guys are disking, but the 856 should handle it no problem -

we pulled a 21 JD disk (old one) with an 806 - we could pull it in high 1 all the time high 2 if u were going shallow or first pass on cornstalks

then we would throw a 300 gallon sprayer on the three point - fill her up with water and treflan and spray treflan and incorporate at the same time all in high 1 with the same 806

neighbors put 15000 hours on an 856 pulling 21 foot disks.... new clutch every couple years -

we finally broke down and got a 1066 to help the 806 out - it wouldn't pull it any faster but it was a lot quieter.....

Yes, the 4620 or 5020 should pull it as they are in the 130-140 HP range. For heavy work with it you will want 130 HP + or -. Use to pull a 20 ft. single offset for very light work with 120 HP 4320 but not for heavy work and then used 140 HP 4450 or 175 HP 6030 but a single offset pulls harder than the double offset too. Could always take the wings off. 12-14' is plenty for 100 HP.

Another job where FWA shines.
