Ok, I think it is time for me to get a hearing aid. I can't hear myself think anymore (no wise cracks). I know we have lots of knowledge on this board so I would like to know which hearing aids are preferred. I hear out of one ear ok but the right ear not picking up much especially low tones. Looking for good quality at a reasonable price if possiable. BTW you may want to type in BOLD so I can hear what you are saying.
thanks folks, Jerry

Two older fellows are talking one day. The first mentioned his new hearing aid, the fabulous performance, how clear everything sounded. But he did comment about the high price, $4000.00. His friend asked "What kind is it?" The first said "Oh, it's about 12:30."

Having spent a career working in the field and teaching electronic technology, I can't get over the recent prices of a simple minaturized microphone, I-C amplifier (digital or analog), battery, case, and speaker labeled as a "hearing aid" (roughly the same as a tiny PA system). So, unless you discover a new source for these things (under some other name), be prepared to make a substantial donation to the seller's retirement fund and the manufacturer's bottom line. The service I've had, locally, is good - free cleaning and sometimes free batteries (cheap at Radio Shack) for expensive units. I keep hoping for more competition and a break in prices since so many of us age-70 and above are now in the population (I need another one already). But, the latest buzz is "Digital" which is hyped to be worth a lot more $$$, but I'm not prepared to judge whether or not it's that much better.

In all fairness to the dispensers, they do have to test hearing and set up the aid to compensate (as best they can) for your range of hearing loss (they're not magicians), They also make a simple mold so the device will fit your ear. After that, regular cleaning is required or the aid will get like a 60-year old tractor - full of grunge, and then probably quit working. Mine did, but a $270 repair took care of that (the aid, not the tractor).

Don't buy any aid which does not have some kind of automatic volume limiting, and have it set up correctly, or else some sharp sounds (which didn't ever bother you before) will simply drive you up the walls. Background talk & noise will likely be a problem, but the aid will help overall. It's no cure for age or years of hearing loud sounds!

Depending on your state's law, they may also run you through a Doctor's office for some kind of medical certification before they will sell you an aid. Those who lobby legislators apparently did their work well. Good luck...

My 2-cents.

I have 2 but rarely waer them. I hate the things. They , no matter what I try miricle ear wahtever dont work worth a shoot. The mircle ear was by far the best but IF in any resutrant etc the surrounding noise all blended together and could never hear the person talking to me, jsut sounded like muffled droaning. Then working in the shop hearing aids and air hammers dont blend at all sp if you arent the one using it and somone is starting stopping starting stopping pain to turn them up and down and off and on. I jsut go w/i and go aorund not hearing, just give me a work order, what you want me to do and i dont worry about what the wife has to say.

jdman, that's what I have been doing just trying to hear what I can but at times I cannot hear what people next to me are saying even in a quiet room. It's kind of like that raisen brand crunch commerical where the guy is talking but seems like he is just moving his lips. I have been cuping my hand over my ear to hear lately. thanks
Jerry

Last winter I was having the same sorta problem and googled it. And found a device you can use in the shower to irragate the crud out of your ear canal safely. I was astonished a what came ouy of my clogged ear. Hope that is your problem. The warmer the water the better.

I can relate to what you are talking about a lot more than I wish. I have lost about 80% of my high frequency hearing in my right ear, and about 40% in my left ear. My low frequency hearing is about 35% gone in both ears. Have a continuous ringing in my right ear (tinnitus). It seems I will hear people talking, but sometimes don't understand a word they are saying. I guess working around jets for 20 years now, and working on agriculture and industrial equipment for 7 years before that didn't do me any good. Still have to have a hearing test once a year, and since 2002 when they lowered my base line for the second time I've been able to pass them. When you find a good hearing aid, please post. I'm sure I'll be needing one also in a few more years.

Jim

Most Wednesdays, I lunch with approximately forty WWII Eight A.F. Veterans. Most are past eighty years of age. Some hear well without help. Some need to hear better, there are those who have tried to use aids and given up because they seemed unsatisfactory. Many have bought more than one brand, spending thousands and not been very happy with any of them. I can not give you any guidance on brand but suggest you visit with some elderly in your area who have had some experience with hearing aids. No matter the brand you choose, I think the service from the supplier will be as important as the brand.

Jerry, Is the issue "hearing" or "listening"? My Missus says I hear OK, but don"t listen worth the hoot. I"ve been looking for a device that will filter out unwanted chatter. Sort of like a SPAM filter, if you will, only installed in a hearing aid. If anyone here knows of such a device, I would welcome any feedback, as I"m sure you would also. I was warned years ago that farming too many acres without a muffler would one day come back to haunt me, and it has, along with a few others.

Paul, I think its both in my case. I can't hear lots of things and I don't listen to other things that I can hear. I'm with you on this, sure would be nice to have that kind of device. thanks, Jerry
