Ok , a neighbor has an 1850 Oliver deisel whish has just had a rebuilt injector pump put on it. Trying to start it takes litterally a1/3 can of either ( I know what is thought of either here) but otherwise it wont start cold. Once it starts you have to keep giving her a shot of either every couple seconds, when she finnally will start running on her own with out dying, she has really no power, and smokes ( all colors smoke it looks to me). But.... Once it is really good and hot it will start good and seems to have decent power but when I was runnning it yesterday wide open on a big turd haulerit sounded as though there was some preignition going on or something, just didnt have that smooth pulling deisel sound, kinda sounded like some one was tossing firecrackers into the intake or something. I would like to help them out with it if possible I beleive it is their winter tractor for the turd hauler and they need it. Any one ever experienced this or have some advice, I 'm still working on the 544 starting performance, but what the heck oly knowledge is power as well. Thank in advance gang.

Is it possible to time 180 degrees off? Yes it will run, but have the symptoms that yours do.

I"ll tell you one thing..... .....The perk in my 1850 is getting pretty tired, but that old SOB starts better in the cold than some newer engines I been around.

Like the others said, check timing, compression, also the injectors to see if any are clogged. Probably compression, I'd be willing to bet, from the sounds of things, maybe you are looking at an inframe. That Perkins 354 is one of the best engines of that size ever made, and it should be doing better for you than that. Plug it in if you can to keep it warm, fix it as you need to, but throw away that ether can. I saw what ether does to a 354 and it sure ain't pretty. I live in 35-below country and have had several diesels and never use it in any of them.

I'll not disagree that it could be timing but all that noise in the intake screams burned or chipped valve to me.

I would add that sounds may be parts of a top ring or the piston land making their exit from the engine, if so much ether is used. Engine may not only need timing correctly, but may need a good overhaul. Compression or compressed air tests will show if this is the case.

Timing is what the problem is. I bet that the timing got changed when they rebuilt it. Did you line up the timing marks when you installed the pump? If not, then do so. Most pumps have a cover with 2 dashes, once they are lined up with the engine at a certain angle, you are good to go. off timing will cause a really hard starting tractor and a loss of power when cold and when hot too.

Check timing also sounds like when they rebuilt the pump they got the fuel turned down to low.

Amnot familiar with Olies but iwould check timing . Irecently checked my tractor an set according to a generic repair book an it missed same as yours . After checking Case book set it to correct setting an no longer misses. Was correct in first place.
