I know there has been tons of posts on here about gas prices. What really bothers me about fuel prices is these school districts that are putting fuel in the busses vs computers int he rooms books etc for my children. Also the single mothers etc who really cant afford heating oil etc. I dont liek fuel price but blaming somone or b&tching about it wont cahng eit. Be glad for your health and do the best you can. They got you, the controlables and uncontrolables do what you can. Driving to work, getting groceries uavoidable do the best you can and htats about all you can ever do.

Why are there so many single mothers? Not very long ago. A single mother was a widow or a hooker. People are in the place they are because that is where they are content to be.

I have to disagree with you on that. Most people I know aren't 'where they are simply because they are content where they are' as you say. Rather they are content where they are because that's the hand life, society or whatever, has dealt them and there is only so much they can do about it. Not to say any and all of us aren't responsible for our own actions because ultimately we are, but there are other factors involved. Think about the single mothers you mentioned, no matter how they became that way, and what they go through trying to get chid support. I know a woman right now with a 9 year old boy that hasn't seen a dime of support yet. The sorry a-- father is out of state, but everybody, including the Child Support people know where he is. They have had the paternity tests done so there is no doubt, and still no support. What are they gonna do, lock him up where he can't work??? One way he might have money and won't pay, the other he has no money and can't pay because he's in jail. It doesn't matter wether she was married to the guy or not, the law says he has to pay but then "the law" doesn't take the necessary action to make him pay. No matter what the circumstances the woman simply has to 'be content' with the life she has and do all she can to maker it better. Depending on her skills and education she's pretty well screwed when it comes to having anything. To work full time she has to have a day care..which takes most of the money she makes at work...but whe has to have the day care in order to work...but it takes most of what she makes...It's a vicious cycle with no end in site so, all she can do is do all she can, and 'be content' or live a miserable life because no matter how hard she tries the chances of ever actually getting ahead are virtually none. As for some of us others, like myself, I'm content where I am too, but do I have a choice to be anything else other than being miserable? I'd be alot more content if the government didn't take 1/3 of what I make every year. Man it'd be nice to have all that extra money and be able to pay off my mortgage in 10 years instead of 30. Then I could get old and retire and not have to worry about social security or anything else because I'd have the money to take care of myself. Instead I give it to the government and have to rely on them to take care of me later....Content, yeah, I am because I have to be, what am I supposed to do, go on the lamm and hide from the IRS, get thrown in jail for not paying them the money that I worked my a-- off to make??? Used to be people that fought the government were partiots and people followed their lead and we got our freedom from an oppressive government. Nowdays if you speak out against the government your a radical or a traitor. It used to be Government of the people by the people, now it's government of the people by a select few.... who have very few rights except the right to be 'content'.....Just my .02

Wayne, While I agree that single motherhood is a growing problem, it is not an insurmountable problem. There is also no such thing as "Theres only so much they can do about it". That is a cop out, and not valid here in the U.S. The first thing a single mother can do is make sure she teaches her children well, so that the cycle does not transfer to the next generation. She can insist that her children go to school, sit up and listen, and become good citizens. I read recently of a man who was blind from birth who came to the U.S. as a refugee from Haiti with no education, who didnt speak English, and had more obsticles facing him than the majority of people we would deem poor in this country. He could have very well settled for the same life style and whatever those who depend on someone else for their well being, But he chose to take advantage of the opportunities that the U.S. afforded him, and became a very successful businessman. If a blind, uneducated black man from Haiti can make it, so can a single mother. Regardless of whatever argument anyone offers as to why people here in the U.S. live in poverty, the fact is that nobody has to stay that way, except for a very few. Even the sick and disabled find ways and means of supporting themselves if they take advantage of the opportunities that exist. There are times when we may be temporarily broke or without funds, but it does not ever have to be a permanent situation. There are always options. Making it a permanent situation, and being content in a unfavorable situation is not an acceptable excuse. Those prople have to be willing to pay as big a price for success as they are of failure.

There are two sides to every story. There are also the b*tches who leave with the kids to live with their new lovers, and the kids' father is ordered to pay more than half of his gross income in support. After tax, this leaves him destitute, yet that mother pays no tax and doesn't have to work at all, gets welfare, plus hundreds in baby bonus from the govt. Her income alone is nearly three times what the father's is after he pays his tax. This without live-in lover's income, which doesn't count according to the gov't. Father has no hope of ever retiring, would never be able to afford to live, as support is more than pension would be. I know, I'm one of those guys. Never missed a payment yet, but I get audited every year for 12 years now, because the gov't automatically figures every man is a deadbeat. It's no wonder there ARE so many deadbeats. It's either that or work for nothing.

Stickler, Been there done that. There is an end to it eventually and you will be glad that the kids are grown and you can go on with the rest of your life. The kids are 40 now and know what a b*&%H their mother is. My youngest son wont marry cause he has seen what she did to me. Hang in there man.

I seen my buds that hate the thought of marriage because of their Mom's that took off on their Dad. There are good gals out there. I was lucky and got one, but guys gotta be careful these days. Sorry to hear what you had to go through. All too common these days. Not that some guys don't do the same thing, but guys I know are all good Dad's and stepped up as #1 caretaker when Ma took off for her "new life". Hard to watch and makes it hard for kids to repect women in general.

The "best woman ever" dumped me last night after she "learned learned about herself lately", and decided I was not beneficial to her career or happiness after her new found awakening. So much for honesty. I guess her tractor is mine now.
