We (extended family) are spending a week at Gulf Shores, starting tomorrow (Saturday). Been following the progress of the tropical storm. Latest forecast calls for sustained winds of 50-55 mph with gusts to 70 Saturday night. Haven't seen anything to keep us from heading out..... early in the morning; arrive about 4 or 5 P.M. Are the natives restless????? ? Should we be concerned?????

Run, run, run as fast as you can in reply to thurlow, 06-10-2005 08:58:14
Good morning thurlow. Was just joking about the run stuff though. May wanna wait a day just to play it safe.

Back in the early 80's when was stationed at Ft. Hood, me and the buddies used to head down to Galveston Island every weekend and got whacked by one. Was pretty big, whatever it was called and tore up a lot of stuff. I don't recall anyone getting seriously hurt or worse, but sure made a mess of things. Even worse, much worse, to the point of devestating? No hot chickies at the messed up beach for a few weeks - was disasterous. LOL.

Good luck, have fun, and send some of that rain here to Indiana - we're dying for it. Good luck buddy.

Mark.

Thurlow,

Looks like you"ll be arriving about the same time as Arlene, although she has been speeding up a bit in the last few hours. Wind speed should be about 70 mph. Power may go out for awhile but not for long. Mandatory evacuations are in affect along the beaches and low lying areas. My son & I are still cutting up trees from Ivan--anyone need some firewood??

BTW, where are you driving from??

Ripley, TN, thru Memphis, Jackson, Hattiesburg, Mobile; original plan was to leave at 5:00 A.M. this morning.....about 8 1/2 hours driving time (actual time close to 10..... .there's a 4 year-old nephew along). New plan is to leave Sun morning..... ..or maybe Mon; depending on where the storm tracks inland. Brand-new house on beach; completed last week, after last year's hurricane trashed the original. Realtor.....on-site..... we're renting from is keeping us well-informed. Thanks, guys.

Thurlow,

That's a good idea--seems like a Sunday a.m departure would be OK. The weaker storms break up fairly quickly once they're over land. Even if you run into it along I-55 or US 49 in Mississippi, by then it'll be like going through a thunderstorm.

Have a safe and a good trip.

I work just up the street from the National Weather Bureau Office here in Huntsville and we get the very latest predictions. As of 1:30PM the prediction was Arlene is gaining speed and is expected to turn in to a hurricane before it reaches the coast of Alabama. Better bring your raincoats folks cause yur gonna get wet. Bad timing.

On the other side of the state 'bout 490 east of "Arlene". First one of the yr. so should not be any worries. They say last yr. was easy for FL and this yr. we better "be ready".

I hate this time of yr, I am the Disaster Event Coordinator here at the day job. Need to get me some land up in CO or ID. Then I can also change my handle Hillbilly :)

Check the link below and in upper RH corner put in zip code of where you will be staying and you can get 7 DAY forecast.

I appreciate the feedback from you guys; been monitoring the thing all day on "Weatherbug"; gotta decide here in a couple of hours, but we're probably gonna push back the leave time 24 or 48 hours. Cynicsim; what do you really think of Dan Rather, no holding back this time?????

The storm looks like it will be going in between pensacola and mobile. That would put where you are going just to the west or good side of the storm but still to close to go there in my mind.
I would put it off 24 hours and then leave to arrive sunday afternoon.

Have Fun!!!!!

You guys pay attention. Those guys from la have webbed feet and don't get them from sitting around a pool. Grin.

I like the idea of waiting. Then you know for sure. These things are very unpredictable and as John surely knows, they can be devistating.

Let's see Carla, 1959, Camille 1969 are 2 that come to mind. I too was on the coast for Carla. Not nice around Grand Isle.
