If you get head work gone a diesel engine will it improve it's performance ??? Could you get a head ported and polished to make more HP for a pulling tractor????? Or get a head decked lower for more compression on a diesel engine ?

You can raise compression by milling head only if it has a combustion chamber/ reducing chamber volume. On a diesel you will have to watch Valve protrusion spec ! .Porting and polishing will not have much effect, no manifold vacuum on diesel. The notion of knocking out rings comes from the fact if you have a tired engine and have some compression losses past upper end, then when upper is fixed , compression is increased and so is leakage past worn rings. Maybe increased blowby would be a result , but no damage to pistons or rings will be done from doing valve job . My 2 cents .

Improving performance and gaining more horsepower may not always go hand in hand.I think you mean to get more power which will happen if volumetric efficiency is improved by the porting job.Polishing is only to please the customer and does little for airflow.Thermal effeciency and mechanical effeciency are the other ways invovled in power increase.Over enlarged ports can decrease power so porting must be done to a flow bench proven design. In many normal use instances you may not outdo the design of factory engineers that are looking for all around performance not just lots of horsepower. What Im trying to say is you cant drive an Indy or stock car to work and you cant plow fields with a pulling tractor. Each modification to an engine must be carefully planned and tested or you may be going backwards for a certain application of the machine. As far as compression ratios there will be a point where the raising above a certain level of compression will decrease power due to the difficulty the engine has of overcoming to much "squeeze". Id say the general answer to your question is probably yes it will increase power.

Getting heads polished and ported will help air-fuel flow, it has to help. Tractors are no differant then any other engine. If you can find one, get a copy of Waddell Wilson's Racing Engine Preparation, (out of print but they are around), its the best book I have seen on engine prep, how to and why.

Kraig,Waddell is one of my heros and I love the racers prayer in the front of the book. Now dont get mad but its copyright 1975,you might want to update some of your motorbooks if you havent already.[Not trying to be a wiseguy just trying to tell you theres alot of newer good books out since Racing Engine Preparation was published]It is a classic must have book I must say.

The valves you could do but I'm not sure about doing the other. Also if its an older engine/high hours and all you do is the head it will knock the rings out of it because you are fixing just part of what should be done, I have found if you work on the top you also need to do the bottom.
