In our area (Mid-mich) there are quite a few women actively involved in the farming process. Every trip I make to the elevator, I see several women driving everything from tractors pulling gravity wagons, to straight trucks to semis to tandem trailers. Many are also operating combines. I remember about 20 years ago I attended the farm science review at Ohio State University, where there are dealers and factory reps for every type of equipment related to farming. each manufacturer had combines doing corn and bean harvesting demonstrations, and while most were being operated by factory reps or dealer salesmen, Massey ferguson had women operators who were farm trained with many hours logged as combine operators. The sales reps followed along behind the combines with the peanut gallery, and as the Massey Ferguson women consistantly our performed there male counterparts, the sales reps played to the male ego in all of us, and kept hammering home the underlying theme that "if a woman can accomplish this much with a combine, and it is easy to see that our machine outperforms the competition, imagine what you could do with one of our machines". Chauvinists that we men can be, many were quick to credit the machine, rather than the experience of the woman operator over the bumbling of a sales rep who was in all probability the furthest thing from a combine operator. Having said that, I do think women make great combine operators as they stay focused and do not become easily bored. They also take great pride in doing a good job. Now if the thing breaks down, they may or may not be able to fix it.

The seed dealership she runs looks pretty big to help pay for new equip, and didn't she do a lot of contract growing (sweet corn/ peas) to reduce harvest time pressure?

There are a few gals around these parts doing the farming, and lots of partnerships where the gal does as much or more than the guy...

I farm WITH my wife and son. We all have full-time "day jobs" (off farm) and still do almost 1400 acres of crops. Sandy has done about 80% of the combining over the last 10 years. She's been drilling soybeans all day today... This is her future, her income, and her life just as well as mine. Son Jason is starting to do some of the corn planting, and MOST of the truck driving. At this rate, ol' "dad" won't have much to do 'fore long!
