Anyone have experience with Gator mower blades. I want to put them on my 5 food Woods mower, but want to know if they are worth the extra dollars to buy them. Any comments are appretiated.

I tried a set last year. The edge stayed good on them, seemed to work better in tall grass. Cast was just slightly less than the Deere blades for a #47 46" mower. Got them right at the Deere dealer. They are made by Oregon - those guys should know something about cutting stuff.

I've used Gator Blades for three years now. We call 'em "the tall grass setup". The are excellent in tall grass and take less HP, plus they seem to "suck" a lot of the old dead grass up. I run 'em real close to the ground the first couple of mowings, bag it and dump it. Makes for a great looking yard!

I have 2 INDENTICAL mowers. (John Deere 265/48" deck/17 HP Kawasaki) One has gator blades (at the recomendation of a good friend) The other has "stock" Deere mulching blades. While mowing side by side, in the same lawn, same grass, the gator blades leave FAR less clippings than the Deere mulching blades. They stay sharp longer, and generally perform better all the way around.

They don't work miracles. If you'r clipping several inches at one pass, they'll still leave clippings. If the grass is wet, they'll leave clippings/ BUT... under normal conditions, they do MUCH better than any blades I've tried. (I mow almost 3 acres of lawn, as often as 2 times a week.) The Gator blades replaced conventional blades on the 265 there on now. There is NO COMPARISON as to how much better they do than the originals.

I will as soon as mower #2 needs blades. I can't bring myself to shelf a perfectly new set of blades, even if there are BETTER ones on the market.

Dad and I have tried some on several different mowers.Cost is about the same as the regular blades. Some mowers they work great on and others not that much difference,You would have to be the judge of that for your mower and your type of conditions.I have them on a JD LX172 38" deck I am not happy with the way it cuts but the Gator Blades are the best so far and take less power than the JD high and med. lift ones. Go to their web site and read about them. From what I remember they are to help with the multching by redirecting the clippings back over the blade again so they can get cut some more.

Gator blades are not for extra mulching. The slotted backs are for two differnet functions. #1 To prevent wearing the back half off high lift blades and cracking them when cutting on sandy soils.. #2 They look cool and people buy them because they look like some sort of super mulching chopper.

I'll second what Buickanddeere said!
While I had my lawn service I tried them for a couple of weeks in the spring and summer. Ended up taking them off. Used them in the fall to mulch leaves. They work better on leaves than regular blades. Not much other benefit that I can see.
