I'm grateful for the discussion last week on using chains vs staps for securing tractors to a trailer. It gave me an opportunity to assess my own needs. Of course, being the serious cheapskate that I am, I wasn't about to pay several hundred dollars to upgrade my piece of mind.

Here's what I did. I think others will find it useful, so I'm passing it on. Tractor Supply (and other retailers) sell grade 70 5/15" chain for about $2.65 +/- per foot. They also sell that exact same chain in a 20' package, complete with grab hooks on each end. It's labeled "trucker's chain". Now I don't need 20 ft lenghts, but I can use 2 10 ft lenghts on each end of the tractor. If I bought it by the piece, I would be out 40 ft X $2.65 plus 8 grab hooks at $4.00 each. Total cost is about $165 with tax. By buying 2 of their "trucker's chain" packages, using their cutter to split them in half, and now only having to buy 4 grab hooks, I'm out $27 X 2 plus 4 hooks at $4.00. Total is about $75.00. Not too bad frugal engineering if I do say so.

I did the same thing, bought 20 ft ones & got them to cut them to 12 & 8 , several years ago. The Clerk could never understand why I did not just buy cut lengths I wanted. I finally gave up explaining. Everytime I went there after that, she mentioned me cutting those chains. Last time I was in TS, all of the hooks, binders, etc say China..... Speaking of straps, last week a guy I know had a 135 MF with a Bush Hog on a Flat gooseneck. All that was holding it was a light 3 inch nylon strap. I tried to explain laws & safety to him, he laughed at me. Hope DOT stops him soon before tractor rolls off, bet he will not laugh at the ticket..... ..
