I posted over on the combines and harvesters forum but thought this might be a better place as it seems there is a little more "traffic" over here.
I am looking for a hay swather to use as a power unit to build a large lawn mower. I am talking 18 foot of cut lawn mower. I know absolutely nothing about swathers. The only thing I do know is they are sometimes found with diesel engines, and hydrostatic transmissions. I have looked around a bit but there is not much out there on used swathers. I cannot find any specs anywhere for used swathers. I need at somewhere between 50-70 horse and diesel powered. Hydrostat is also a must. I would like a fairly trouble free machine with a good track record. I do not need the head unit just the rest of the machine. What are some good units that are out there? Which ones should I stay away from? What kind of price should I expect to pay? Thanks Jaker

Just a thought, but why not get a big "lawn mower"? More specifically, a golf course "turf mower, fairway mower, ect... I work as a maint. supt. at a large country club. We deal with several "turf equipment dealers" that frequently take trade-ins, and then offer them at very attractive prices. John Deere comes to mind, as I was looking at a "used equipment price sheet" from a dealer in Ohio this very morning. Some of the fairway mowers are up to 24'. They run upwards of $20,000 new, but used will sell as low as $1500.

Just a thought. Nothing like a well engineered, factory built, parts available piece of equipment.

If you might be interested, reply, and I will gather a list of turf equipment dealers near you. (Let me know what state/city you're near)

Hi Jaker,

I've always like the Hesstons or the John Deeres.

A good used one is gonna be kinda spendy tho and I doubt if you'll find a good one without the head.

For example, they are asking $37K for this little 14 foot model.
