Two of my brothers put up small squares that they sell mostly to horse people. They use a pair of JD 24Ts.

Don't knock it they were great balers I have stood behind one for days on end they produce good quality bales as long as a red tractor is in the lead .

I bet the only way he'd use it is if it was painted red and had IH decals.

Hi Gang;
Interesting to read how many of you still make hay, and make small bales. Over here small bales have almost totally disapeared.
Does anyone make/sell small square balers today in US? Over here JD & Claas do sell a few to special order. Several agric dealers restore old models especially New Hollands for sale to small farmers.
Cheers David

Small bales sell real good. There are lots of people that have just a few horses and sheep or goats etc. and only have a few acres so they buy what they need. I had to pay $2.00 to $3.50 a bale when we had goats. The bales aren't that heavy either,not like when my uncle used to make them.

Small square bales are actually still a decent percentage of the hay market in the US, or I should say in certain areas of the US. Here in the midwest they are more of a specialty crop and most of the guys doing any volume of them are selling them. We did about 11,000 last year and that's alot for this area but most of them were sold and small square bales still have the widest variety of markets to sell in.

Deere, New Holland, Freeman and Hesston all still sell small square balers in the US but I don't know what percentage of the total baler market they represent.

We bought a JD 346 and the problem we've run across is the baler seems to do everything right except for not feeding the wire into the knives and will twist around the knotters. Anyone know what this balers problem is?

I think Allen is working on getting them outlawed here in the USA. Something about them causing muscle pains, and they cause marriage problems up in his part of the country (LOL).

That shot finally shows me what the slot in my pto cover is for! I've spun it in vain looking for a grease nipple of some type.
