I will second "the works"! after seeing how well it removed iron in my toilet tank I have used to derust several things.try a couple bottles and fill the rest of the tank with water aliow it to set several hours to over night, then rinse well and dry.If this dosen't clean it then you can remove the tank and do it right but hey 2 bottles is only $5 or so so what's to loose? use caution it is a fairly strong acid

I had the same issues with a tank and it was suggested to me on this sight that I try a three part KREEM product. It can be found at a motorcycle shop. It does require removing the tank though so it may not be an option, but it did work.

If you dont' want to handle the job yourself, I tokk one of my tanks to the local radiator shop and just had it dipped. Cleaned it really well. I did use Eastwood's sealer for added protection.

I had a 730 JD gas with a rusty tank. I sent to Renew Tank in Minnesota. It's a bit expensive but they clean the tank and bake in a poly liner, it worked great. I also had a 300 massey combine with a rusty tank, but this project was on a shoestring budjet. I talked to an old mechanic, he said to use "the works" toilet bowl cleaner. I took the tank off, got three bottles(the stuff is cheap) and poured in the first bottle. It didn't do squat til I started rinsing the tank out. Then rust started to come out. So I deduced this stuff needs water to activate it. I put a couple gallons of water in the tank, the other two bottles and let it sit. Then I swished it around. I repeated this for about ten minutes, dumped the tank out, rinsed it, and it was really clean. I could see the galvinizing in the bottom of the tank again. I ran some diesel thru the tank to take care of any leftover moisture. The sediment bowl has been clean ever since. One word of caution is watch where you dump the stuff. I did it over our shop drain and ate the sealant off the cement. Give it a try. I do agree that you'll have to take the tank off to do a good job. Brokenwrench.

Please post the method you used and how it worked, it's always fun to here of different ways that work.

I agree with Rusty, you cannot get a tank clean without taking it off, physcially impossible. You can clean the bottom, but the sides and top will still be rusty. So, do yourself a favor, take off tank, clean it and then seal it with red-coat sealer. That stuff works great. If you do use Red-Coat, you do not have to clean it quite as clean, the Red-Coat will seal all the fine rust and scale.

Get the gas tank repair kit from the eastwood company. once you have used this you will never have to touch the inside to the tank again.

Don't mean to argue but if the job is worth doing it's worth doing right. The tank needs to be removed.

I use turpentine but in your case you may still need to remove the tank. The turpentine sort of turns the rust in to a liquid state.

I use a 50% muratic acid 50% water, Fill it full, let it set for a couple of hours then flush it very good with strong soapy water then clean water, it is best to remove the tank to do this so you can slosh it around. you can also make a nozel for your hose out of a piece of copper tubing so you can blast it good in all the nooks and crannies. I have a friend who uses orange shalic to line his fuel tanks, it costs pennies and seems to work very good.

Walter, I've used the muriatic acid myself, it is pretty much guaranteed to get ALL the crud.
