I'm going to be making a trip out to the old stomping grounds to pick up some parts and I'll be needing a decent single axle trailer, 14 inch tires, 2500 GVW or so.. Maybe a 5 by 8 or 6 by 10.. It's gotta carry an old jeep with no drivetrain in it, behind my 4 cyl pickup truck.

Any of you guys know what one of those goes for out there? Here in NY new they range around 850-1200, and I can't find any used ones. I'll be going thru Phoenix and Denver, so if you know any place that sells trailers at a super price, let me know.

It's either that or make one and carry it along in the back of the truck.. I do oversize escort work and can't drag a trailer during work. The trip west will hopefully be a paying escort run.

You say 4 cylinder pickup, that is the critical part as any 4 cylinder that I know of will be overloaded with that Jeep and trailer, you need to find an alternitive, any hills and you will not be able to go up them in high gear and also to much weight on back and you will not be able to controll the truck and at any rate you need trailer brakes and a load leveler hitch, read all the posts about overloading towing vechicels

Well if your coming this way anyway drop down to Sikeston MO. There is several factories there and its about 2 1/2 south of ST Louis on I-55. I bought a 6 1/2 x 12 tandem this spring for less that $600 . And there are several places along I-70 west of ST Louis in ST Charles MO about 20 miles from down ST Louis that sell them for about 80-90 more than Sikeston and that way you save a 150 mile trip south. And why can't you drag a little trailer when escorting I have done it a few times and a small trailer would not really get in the way that much would it.

Info? in reply to Leland, 11-19-2004 06:22:51
Hey now there's the kind of info I was looking for. How'd ya register the trailer or do they give ya transport plates? Do you remember the make of the trailer? GVW? tire size?

I did a search on google for Sikeston trailer manufacturers and only found one co, looked like retail prices on the net. I assume when you show up at the factory with cash prices are cheaper? If I can get a deal I'll sell it when I get home and do the same thing again in a few months. I'd rather do that with a nice shiny new one than try to buy someone's old junker out there.

In sikeston there are small trailers stuffed on any empty space they can find, So if you have a couple of hours to spare just look around town.As far as registion they just give you a bill of sale and when you get home you then pay sales tax and apply for title that is how ILL handles it. So with your bill of sale that should get you home ask your state DMV they may have a temp tag, but I don't belive you can find them cheaper in to many other places . Also I know prices have gone up since steel has went thru roof, but on sizes are from 4x4 and up and anything over 8 foot usually has 15 in car tires and you could go find a couple of 5 bolt 15 in chevy wheels as some trailers prices do not include tires this is how you save money unless you want to pay $$$$ for new tires and wheels. I will try to go down to gas station and get trader paper and get you phone # or email address good luck

About the same price as where you live $850 to $1200 depending on the setup. There are a lot of places pumping out two and four place ATV trailers. Also Home Depot had some the last time I was by there in the same price range.

Rent a U-Haul when you get there.

I agree. A two wheel trailer with a Jeep on it is going to put an enormous amount of weight (for a smal 4 cylinder PU) on the rear bumper. Balancing it directly over the two wheels will resulting in it rocking the rear of the pickup (not good for control at highway speeds - trust me).

For occasional use renting a Uhaul can't be beat for the money. Needed a car hauler three times last year - total rental fees about $70.00. I can't even keep a current tag on a a trailer for that in Kansas - much less buy the trailer.

yeah but..... in reply to dhermesc, 11-19-2004 10:01:16
Total weight of the jeep stuff is about 1000 lbs. none of the heavy stuff, axles, wheels, engine, radiator, transfer case, etc is coming along. If it was a full complete CJ-7 I"d agree with you guys but this is a stripped WWII shell.I"ll be lucky if it doesn"t blow away in a crosswind:-)

I don"t think U haul has anything appropriate, and I doubt they"d rent it to tow behind my truck anyhow. I have considered that option however.
