Anyone out there every work for this place.
I believe it is connected to the California
Institute of Technology (Caltech). A job is available which I am considering applying
for and just wondered what some of you might
know, good or bad about the place.

Thanks,

Tim, Ohio

Having worked for one of the US science labs managed by a major university I have the following comments.

Pay is 3/4 of what front running hi tech companies pay. Like working for the city or state.

Safety is such an overwhelming issue that I wondered how I was ever able to get anything done. It is totally encompassing and boy if anyone did have an accident, of any kind, here came a team of x-perts from W. DC to understand why and how it would be prevented in the future.

Then there is the political thing where they want to preserve their job and keep their $$$ allotment coming.

Ever hear of the Superconducting Super Collider?

Mark

I worked in the aerospace industry for over 34 years and was on a NASA advisory committee. As I understand it, JPL is located on the Cal Tech campus, but it is a government entity and I believe it is funded throught the space side of NASA. I never heard anything bad about the outfit. they do a lot of neat stuff with satelite and probe propulsion systems, orbital mechanics, etc. Good luck in your job search.

No, have never worked for them. But, something that you can and should take into consideration, especially if are just beginning - they would certainly make for a great resume' material.

Unless you plan on starting out as a CEO right of the box, and such accomplishments are far and few between, you've got to start somewhere. Consider a strong reference vrs. a weak reference. You will work, because you're obviously not independantly wealty, and it will not be a hobby. You will do it because you have to, and the more money that you can make, the easier you'll be able to coast at the end.

Strong resume' material, at least.

When I first started out, after the military, I ended up in Chicago for the $$$ and resume' material, and started out near the bottom. A year of peanut butter sandwiches (at best) and a $5.00 pitcher of beer every other week for entertainment, if I scrounged it up and if the CUBS played at home (and I hate the CUBS), but now years later, that resume' material and lean times have paid off. Now I'm older, fatter, lazier, but I make a real good $ in Illinois, have a small place in Illinois during the week, and a small farm back home in Indiana, where I'll retire one day, paid for.

Besides, even though I hate the CUBS, those young CUBBY chickies that lived in the old Wrigleyville neighborhood, sure were HOTTT, and made for some HOTTT times. All resume' material when you have to start somewhere.

Tim

F.I.T. who hangs around the Deere section of this site has been through JPL doing computer consulting. He's a decent chap and could likely spare a few moments wisdom.

Wow! I gen-u-wine rocket scientist among us. Maybe you can explain the physics of tractors tipping over backwards instead of spinning their wheels for the rest of us.

just kiddin.

Good luck in your application process, I am sure you are making your family and friends very proud.

Naw, I'm just a plain old scientific glassblower. I make things out of glass
for scientific applications. I guess the
rocket scientists need someone good at making
test tubes.

They are an Applied Physics Laboratory and are associated with a University--I believe CalTech. They do a lot of really neat things, you would be on the leading edge of some technologies. Most of the lunar/Mars rover are done by JPL. Typically air and rocket stuff, not so much water and ships. It will be like working for a university and you will find some bright young people either getting experience doing grunt work or using the projects for their research to get an advanced degree.
Also the older guys will be quirky--nerds or funny little mannerisms. Most of these really smart guys haven't been in the real world.

Go for it. It could be fun.
