Hi Guys
Anyone around the Eaton Ohio area ?
Would like to meet some new friends!
Have always loved Farming,Tractors and old equipment. Grew up in the city but always wanted to farm, But having no relitives in farming, all I could do was dream about, that was until I got into high school and took a vocational welding and fabrication class(1972)! Turned out that the teacher was a farmer, We struck up a friendship that has lasted over 30 years! And in them 30 years I don't think he's ever stopped being my teacher! because he's never stopped teaching me about everything from farming to life.
Never did get my own farm! Trying to get into farming in the 70's wasnt the best time in history to try! So ended up in a factory, been a maintenance man in a steel proccessing plant for 27 years now! But never did get totaly away from farming! Would always go out and help my buddy every spring and fall, done alot of maintenance work on his equipment! Some of the best memories I have are of sitting on the seat of 4010 listing to that engine roar, smelling that fresh turned dirt, Of watching them dry brown corn stalks get gobbeled up by that JD55 combine! Man I thought I was king of the world the frist time he turned me loose on that old bine! Anyway you know how time has a habit of moving on! My buddy has retired from farming and leases out his ground now! Same goes for most of all the other farmers I've got to know thru my buddy! most all of them lease out there land to! Mostly to these big outfits that roar in and in one or two days are gone with not much time for chatting or anything! And so I'm left to dream about feeling the power and smelling the dirt again!
So if there is anyone around the Eaton/Gratis Ohio area that would like a helping hand once in a while or just a friend that could come by for a vist now and again! Let me know! For I've been away form it for a while and find that I really do miss it!
Bob Smith

Robert,
I'm just a few miles down the road from you off of State Route 122 west of Middletown. Although I grew up on a farm just east of Middletown it's now paved over and home to Lowes, Wall Mart, Cracker Barrel, etc. I did manage to save my Grandfathers 1949 Farmall H (Bought new by him 3 months before I was born) which I restored about 15 years ago and is now safely tucked away in a small barn on our property. I get it out and play with it lots and take it to about 6 shows during the summer months. The barn is also home to my cousins 1945 John Deere H and my Massey Ferguson 135 diesel with a 6' finish mower that I use to keep our 5 acres mowed. I've been employed by the same company for 26 years as an A&P mechanic working on corporate jets. It's kinda nice to be able to tinker with the "old iron" after 40 or more hours a week working on the high tech airplanes. I've left my e-mail open. Give me a shout and maybe we can get together sometime

Hi Bob, Welcome To The Forums, :)

You can always take a drive to the country and just stop in somewhere and tell the guy your willing too work for free and what you'd like to do. I did that when I was a pup and got two jobs from it.

Although your not looking for work, as you show your experience I would bet you could try out all kinds of equipment you've never used before.

If you lived a little closer, I could use a friend like you. Family farm for years-I'm the last family member to mend the fences. Have made it a hobby collecting 17 iron horses of 4 different colors. Still cover 200 acres of hay ground. Maybe when you retire from your real job some old farmer will put you on one of the tenant farms -free rent for a little help & companionship.

If you realy want to get in to it just find a few and just start helping them. It's the only way now that I can afford to hunt have you seen what people are paying for hunting rights now it's unreal good luck just keep looking you find the right one.

Bob, I can relate to your story. While I was born and raised on a farm here in Mid Mich., I spent most of my adult life either in the Miami Fla. area, Dover Del., and Columbus Ohio. when I retired from the company I worked for as a machinist, I had the opportunity to move back to within 3 miles of the family farm. It had been since sold, and looks nothing like it did when I lived there, but my cousin"s husband farms around 3,600 acres, and my helping drive semi during the harvest 3 yrs ago has turned into just about as many hours as any retired chap would want. Actually I could make it a full time job if I let it. The point is that I am able to live out partially, a life long dream of farming, but without the financial risk. I have been offered several jobs as a C.N.C. machine programmer or operator, or 1st class machinist, or programming consultant for considerably more money than I"m making farming, but at this point in my life, it isnt about the money, its about doing what I love and have always loved. At 65, I don"t know how much longer I"ll be able to do it, as arthritis in old football knees have placed physical limitations on me that I dont particularly like, but as long as I can go, and contribute, I plan to keep it up. Folks ask me from time to time if I have lost my mind working like this, and my answer is that doing something I love isnt work. It may be physically demanding, but it ain"t work to me. If there is any way you can find somewhere to fulfill your dream, by all means, do it. You will never regret it. Keep looking and I"m sure also that you"ll find someone who will afford you that opportunity. Good Luck.

Hi Bob;
I'm a long ways from Ohio, but my suggestion would be to start going to local farm auctions. Every time I attend one, all you have to do is hang around some of the equipment that you have interest in, and you meet some of the nicest people. There's been more than once, I've struck up a acquaintance that has lasted over the years, with nothing more in common to start with than just a old hunk of farm machinery. Good Luck with following your dream.

Geesh Bob too bad you live so far away,,I could use a friend like you,,I moved out to the country 7 yrs ago, spent some time on uncles farm as a kid,,didnt learn too much though just remember working my but off,,lol. Now 3 yrs ago I decided to become horse farmer at the ripe old age of 47. Big race horse fan (thourghobreds),bought a mare year ago, hope to breed her and race her offspring, thats a pretty far fetched dream, but Im gonna give it my best shot,I aint got nothin better to do at this point in my life. I just picked up a Oliver 1550 outta Iowa(btw Im in west central New York)with a FE loader on it,,been fiddlin around with it,,man thats alot of tractor for this city boy,I had a Ford 600 just bushhogged with it and drilled a few post holes,,with no loader on it was like havin a 3 legged race horse.I also work in a factory(paper mill,,boilerroom)probably always will too,,dont think Ill get rich horse farmin.Well if I need some info hopfully Ill get back to ya.

Good Luck Gettin back out to the country.

Stan

Bob, Know what you mean...I Finally got a small farm, 20 acres from an 80 acre here ten miles north of the Ohio line in Hillsdale County, Mi, and altho' I grew up on a hill farm in Western NC, I've never used any of the new equipment, but keeping this place from falling apart, is a fun, and full time, job. I enjoy just being in an area where most of the farms are relatively small, and farmed with "normal" equipment, not the articulated four wheel drive air conditioned monsters...makes for a nice environment. Guess I garden more than farm, and spend a lot of time on my old equipment. If you're gonna be in the area, drop me an email at shoman32@aol.com, maybe we could shoot the bull and kick some clods,

Regards

George
