Viton Needle Valve

I rebuilt the MS carb on my Oliver 550 a couple months ago. Tractor starts good and runs great. My problem is after it has sat for a day or two. It starts ok but runs out of gas after a couple minutes and won't restart unless I tap on the carb a couple times. It will then run fine for the rest of the day. I am thinking the Viton needle valve is sticking to the seat and will not let gas flow into the bowl until I tap on the side of the carb. Both the needle and the seat are new. This carb did not have that little clip between the needle valve and the float. I am thinking I may have to make or come up with one of those clips. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

One solution might be to shut off the fuel and let the carb run dry, stopping the engine. The needle would not be raised during the storage period and probably would not be stuck closed. Another thing would be to coat the Viton with a silicone compound. If you use the fuel shutoff method, be sure to shut off the ignition after the engine stops. Failure to do so will result in another non-starting problem.

Be choosy aobut which type silicone compound yu use, many of them soften in gasoline and leave a goo that stops up carb jets. Learned that lesson the hard way about 25 years ago.

I can agree with both of your suggestions, but will most likely tear it back apart and try the silicone or a new needle and seat. I hate to have to shut it down like a John Deere all the time. I have had this tractor 15 years and have never had to shut the gas off even over the winter. My problems started when my son in law used the tractor this spring and put 5 gallons of gas in, but he forgot to dump the dirt out of his can first. Then to top it off there are three different carbs for this tractor and the brass tag is missing on mine. Yep, the third kit I bought was the correct one. Sure gotta love these kids but at least he doesn't wear his hat backwards.

Give it a try with the little wire clip that pulls the needle down with the float. (If the needle has a groove machined for the clip.) If you can't find one, I've got a junk box littered with them. I'd be happy to mail you one!

Thanks. I can't remember if the needle has a grove or not. I'll see when I get back into it.

I think you are right, you may have to make a clip. I had one that was brand new that was sticking. About drove me nuts til I figured it out. I fixed it by rubbing the tip with my dirty hands.

I have been living with it for a couple months now thinking it would straighten itself out, but I don't seem to have that kind of luck. With cold weather coming on I'll have time to get back into it but I sure hate doing things twice.

Some seats are prone to swell up amd do that if you are using gas with alcohol in it(gasohol).
