I was wondering your folks thoughts on the American's ban on Canadian Beef. I am seeing too many ranches from here in Canada goin jugs up because our beef ain't worth the paper they wrap it in. Whey do you figure it will open? if it ever will? i'm interested in your comments.

Your Canadian Friends, Malamute

The reason for the ban is the type of feed Canada allows to be used. Change the practice of using cattle products as a protein source in the feed and it would then become eligible for importation to the US. I can't say when I think Canada will fully impliment such a change.

Leland: Just to clear things up a bit, I was talking about the whole thread, and just about everyone involved. It makes no sence to produce products for which there is no market.

In the late 80s I used to dump surplus milk(goverment) down the drain just to get rid of it at truck washes. goes on every day some where and not only milk.

Next time:
#1- its not "Darned Americans". They only did, what we did to other countries when they had BSE.-protect their own interests.

#2- correct your spelling and grammar. That looks bad for all of us.

You were probably one of the ones that didn't want our tracing program either. The program has traced all of the offspring from the infected cow, throughout Canada and the US. The program traced the problem back through a sample of feed, that was traced from a imported cow from England. This was before both countries banned feed from rendering. I think that the American election has delayed the border opening. The BSE situation has been a .. I can't explain it, its the packers that have screwed us more continuously then anybody. The only thing, that the Americans are doing that is questionable, again in my opinion, is buying and keeping these cheap replacements up here on feed. ...so once the border opens they can take them home, and make a buck, unfairly. Hound. We tracked all the animals,

The whole BSE flap is sickening. In the end everyone is going to lose. Our big problem is that we relied on shipping a large portion of our cattle to the US for slaughter. Now we are in process of expanding our slaugher capacity to match our herd. Then we will go looking for overseas markets and compete directly with the US. When the border opens there will be an over capacity of slaughter plants and some will have to close and people will be out of jobs. US workers are already out of jobs in some plants because they can"t get Canadian cattle to kill. A local co-op is buying a Pre-Fab plant from Washington State. They were slaughtering cows from Canada and went belly up when the border closed.

Also a lot of consumers would not be happy to learn that some of the high priced meat in the supermarket came from Canada, at fire sale prices. The big packers are making a killing off this situation.

Just to stir the pot a little more, most cattlemen up here do not want Kerry to win the election. He is on record as stating he wants to keep the border closed.

Sorry for the rant, but the frustration levels up here are getting a little high

John

Hate to say this but me, every rancher I know, most other people that I know of in my rural community support the ban. I live and farm near the border and was sick of seeing semi after semi after semi of Canadain beef go south down the interstate when our prices were in the dumps. Have you guys thought about finding other markets instead just us?

Just a guess, but the market will probably reopen when Canada begins supporting our war against terror.

Oh well, I prefer Flint Hills beef anyway.

Organic label might help with worry about Mad Cow sickness. Otherwise looking at eating your own beef next 2+ years. RN

Guess we're all overproducing. Ever try tapping into the European market? If you do, I hope you don't use hormonal injections.
