Im going to be going from a non live PTO to a live PTO tractor, are there some safety issues I should be aware of,Ill be bush hogging and post hole drilling with it,its a Oliver 1550,Ive heard some horror stories about the momentum of your implements continuing to move you forward,is this something that comes into play with a live PTO.

Thank You

Oliver has a step above live pto, known as independent pto. All you need to do is move the lever in & out of gear to operate it, independent of whatever else you are doing.

With either live or independent pto, the tranny & pto are seperate systems, so it is much safer. Your old tractor without live pto is the one that had safety issues.

Hey Dug,

Dont sweat the seat too much. If its like mine, it will re-form "with-time." Take Care.

Steve

Bushhogging. Crank tractor with clutch fully depressed and trans in N. Engage PTO lever. Select gear of choice. Slowly release clutch.

PTO will almost immediately start the hog a spinnin....tractor has 0 ground speed.

Let clutch out about half way and tractor starts moving in direction selected.

Iffin you wanna do a corner, stop tractor with clutch only HALF WAY depressed, hog still a spinnin, change gear, let clutch back out and you are backing into corner. Hog never stopped. Beautiful HUH!

Post holes. With auger raised, PTO off, position auger over desired location. Depress clutch fully. Engage PTO. Tranny can be in N or any other gear. Select moderate RPM's (1000). Let clutch out a little and PTO starts the auger a spinnin. Lower PTO and start diggin. When it's observed that your hole is not going in straight, select 1 or R gear and let the clutch out to the half way mark slowly and she'll inch in that direction, auger turning the whole time. This way, you can correct for misalignment, and not bend your auger in the process. Nice HUH!.

FYI (know you know this but anyway). I like to keep the lift moving up and down to keep the drillins moving out of the hole.....reduces the load on the PTO. Also when I am as deep as I want to go, I stop the PTO, lift the auger out of the hole, pretty fast, bringing most of the dirt with it and "pop" the clutch which throws most of the dirt that was left in the hole, out and away from it. When I say pop, I just mean that at your 1000 rpm's you just let the clutch out a little bit, rapidly (like raise your toe), then push it right back in.

Welcome to the world of LIVE PTO.

Mark

He has an Oliver 1550, according to the post. Revised instructions- push PTO lever into and out of operation whenever you want, regardless of what's happening with the tractor clutch. In some circles, what you have is designated as an "independent" PTO, to differentiate from the two stage clutch that Mark was talking about.

Damn, that's 2 in 1 day. Missed that. When I read "pushing you forward" I immediately related it to the old Fords (I associate with). Didn't even register that he said Oliver.

Sorry,

Mark

Guess I'll have to slow down, not yak so much, and pay more attention.

Thanks

You have it backwards with the momentum thing. That applies to a "transmission operated" ot "non-live" PTO.
