I bought a 3020 diesel to restore and it's leaking hydralic fluid up front under the fuel tank somewhere. I took the tank off and can't tell where it's comming from. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Terry

Sounds like it could be a power steering line. If you are going to do a serious restoration take the fuel tank off and remove the front plate. You may have to remove the radiator and hyd oil cooler also. It is probably time to replace a lot of the rubber lines anyway.

I have a 3020 PS. There is an oil cooler in front of the radiator. There are hoses in the area, above and below the fuel tank. The hydraulic pump is below the tank. Are you talking a major leak, or slight leak? Put the fuel tank back on, pressure wash the whole area, and watch for leaks. Any leak should be evident with the tank in place, so you can run the tractor and determine the location. It may be just a hose clamp that needs to be tightened. I've found bad hoses, loose clamps, and cracks in the cooler. Everything from a major gusher to a slight leak, but all are evident and easy to fix.

Well sir, maybe you can help me. I have a 4010 and it has a leak also. I checked the hoses and a hyd return line had a bad piece of hose. Replaced it and still leaks.

Would you elaborate about the cooler leaks. I will go back in, but I'm afraid the cooler has a crack; maybe where the lines enter/exit.

How do you repair it.....like an engine cooling radiator?

Thanks,

Mark

Out of five JD tractors, the 3020 is the only one I ever had a cooler leak on. Very slight leak, took it to a radiator shop and they found a leak in the fin area, not the input or output lines. Leak was one that over time would discharge some oil, make a slight mess- never anything to really point to as to the spot of the leak. Other leaks were loose clamps, one or two burst hoses- really fun at night when you lose enough oil to lose steering or PS and end up walking home. Go back in daylight to find oil all over the front end, refill, start up, and the leak is REAL evident in a three inch piece of hose that just cost ten gallons of oil!

Well, my Deere did that to me too one night. Forget the reason. Had to drag it home with one of my blue tractors..... ..glad it was night. Grin.

Thanks for the input. I fixed the little 3" hose problem you mentioned, but mine still has a little leak, just enough to get the dust/oil goo all over the air input filter screen on the rt side, which is the side my hoses come down.

Have a loader on it and it's a pain to raise the hood. Maybe this winter I'll pop it again and look harder.

Thanks,

Mark

There's lots of hydraulic up there to leak. A pump with 8 or 9 pistons each one under a plug that can leak, a pressure regulator, a priority valve, an oil cooler, and a power steering motor. Plus all the pipes to connect all of those.

The pump cases crack, too, usually near one of the plugs over a piston.

Don't particularly know about a 3020, but you might hook up a remote (off to the side) fuel system, crank up the tractor, and play with the hydraulics, steering etc. and see if you can see where it is leaking with the tank off. Never know, it might shoot a little stream right out of the pipe right on top, (NO WAY), Harley
