@#$*&!#!!

Took the Yukon in because of an antifreeze leak last Wednesday. They call back in about 40 minutes and tell me it needs a water pump. Yeah right, okay,
whatever.

Pick up the truck last Thursday, pay the $137 (deductible plus a new fan belt) and bring 'er home.

Two days later, I notice the antifreeze leak is far worse now than it was before it took it in. OKay, fine.

Take the thing back in this morning and tell 'em to make another run at it and see if maybe they can get it right this time.

Feller calls 30 minutes ago and says that the intake gaskets are leaking (Oh, that's a big surprise!) and that it must have just started since the last repair; further I'll have to cough up another $100 deductible. I explain to the young gentleman that he is suckin' wind and that I'm not paying another deductible charge.

Now, he says that he'll have to talk to his boss. Well, okay, go talk to your boss, I don't give a fig.

He calls back.

Says that really, due to the way that the contract is written, legally I am obligated to pay a total of $200 deductible since I had
two separate defective parts.

Hmmmmm m Yeah, right.

But, he continues, that since the dealership was customer oriented, that they would eat the $100 in question. Fine. Fix the damned thing.

Been thinking about this for the past few minutes and I'm getting' madder and madder by the minute. How damned dumb do they think I am anyway? This
outfit has insulted my meager, room temperature intellect.

Me thinks the thing is going down the road to Ford. At least, they do not treat their customers this way.

Rant over,

Allan

The intake and water pumps have some leak concerns with the GM engines. I would call GM to get the second deductible waived. I would also suggest changing the coolant from the orange long life to the green (change every two years) and add four to five ginger root pellets (GM cooling system sealing tabs). The orange doesn't have the sealing or lubricating properties like green. (The orange long life is a low cost marketing thing.) The fel-pro gaskets work the best on GM engines!! Good luck to those who buy import imitation trucks. Seen any old Import trucks, not with a body or running. Have any import companies helped with Sept 11 or the hurricane relief. They say 'screw the Americans'!!

Toyota trucks are made in Kentucky. Fords are made in Canada, GM are made in Mexico. Who's an import?

The orange coolant keeps the aluminum in the radiator from being eaten from the ph changes in the green stuff.
Coolants job is to cool the engine and not eat the radiator or heater core, not to seal leaks...

Allan,
I have replaced a few intake gaskets on the GM's and they will leak inside the same as outside. sometimes they will leak inside long before they leak outside. best way I know to catch it is to do your own oil change. And Allan, all dealerships are not the same, some will do their best to help. here is a good example, in 2001 I bought a new ford car, last year my grandson tells me he want's to be a mechanic and would like to go to U.T.I. in Houston. I didn't like the idea but we gave in. sent him to Houston in the car, then the rains came and the floods started in that aera. he called about nine one nite and said he ran into some deep water that was over the hood. tow truck pulled it out and hauled him to his apt. Then he called and said there was oil leaking out of the engine. The next day I hauled my blazer to Houston and my car back home, ten hours each way. car had 47,000 miles on it and a busted piston and a rod thru the side of the block. I called ford and told them what happened, they said haul it over and they would look at it. fifty mile trip to the dealer and ten minutes talking to the service manager and I was on my way home without the car. I only got one call from the dealer and it was to let me know that the factory rep would have to take a look at it. I told them to let me know before they did any work on it. ten days later I called them to see what was going on, service manager said come get it,it will be ready by the time you get here. I was one mad old dude that they had installed an engine without calling to tell me the cost, when he told me the cost was fifty dollars I got over the mad spell. when we got there and saw that they had cleaned the car inside and out I apologized for the things I said over the phone and tried to give the guy a hundred bucks, he wouldn't take it, said it was all in the line of duty..

From what everyone has posted here, it sounds as though leaking intake manifolds are a common GM problem. The tech should have know by the history of these engines to not only look at the water pump when you brought it in, but also check/replace the intake manifold gasket also. If he had done this, then there would be no 2nd time and wanting a second deductable, and your truck sitting in his shop for a second time. Also remind him that your wifes cat got into this,I think they could be held responsible for any problems with the cat. If it had been fixed right the first time, this problem would not have happened.

Bought a 79 Impala bout 6 months ago in Kansas, drove it to Minnesota, then to Michigan, and been driven it ever since, burns a little oil, but it has a strong 305, 22 mpg on the highway, best car I have ever had, and I had lots of em, will never take it to a dealer for anything. Best 25 bucks I ever spent. By the way, I don't try to keep up with the Jones', you know where they can go. Just a little rant of my own.

Hi Alex,

Back in '78 I bought a new pickup over the phone, which was located at Rosen Novak's lot down in Omaha; I jumped a plane, flew down there and drove it home across state overnight.

It sets out here in the yard today, and for just hammerin' around and doin' my everyday odd jobs, it is still my favorite old workhorse.

She ain't much to look at, but when something goes wrong, I fix it 'cause that old gal has treated me right for many years.

It would be nice to find a 'service advisor' who if brains were dynamite he'd have enough to blow his nose. I get P.O.ed every time I have to dela with the ones here.

2 yrs ago the advisor at the local Ford/Dodge delar gave me the song and dance on my truck '01 Ram 2500. $1600 to put a grease seal in the front axle and, I love this $800 to replace 1 freeze plug in the head. $1 for the plug and $799 labor. I made the argument that a freeze plug should be covered under the 100,000 engine warranty. Wrong, but if I take the head off to change the 'non warranty' freeze plug I void the warranty on the rest of the engine. Of course it is the one next to the firewall. Long story short, local mechanic was able to drill and tap a pipe plug in with an angle drill. He also made a tool to put the seal in without dissassembly of the front axle. Cost me $350 out the door and $13.50x3 for the seals (he had to try twice to get the seal to hold).

WOW, what a response. Why don't Toyota and Honda have these problems? Why did Toyota take over Ford for the #2 spot? My 98 F-150 just at 76k had all four tie rod ends replaced and the clutch throwout bearing is making noise. Can't complain about GM, 98 Z-28 Camaro slave cylynder leaked (inside transmission, like Fords, but unlike Toyota where they put the hydraulic slave cylynder outside the bellhousing), it was out of warranty, but GM paid half of a $500 bill. On 2000 Cavalier, also out of warranty, GM replaced a $250 front wheel bearing. Both cars had just over 36k, on them, and I convinced the service manager to call GM as this was too early to fail and must be defective even though out of warranty. It was good service from GM. Next truck will be a Toyota.

Toyota is my next. I know of two with 300,000 miles and still going. Toyota is a very patient company. Every year they are happy with taking 1% or 2% from the rest. You don't here their CEO's taking huge bonuses like the US Headquartered Based Automobile Mfg. Toyota is insoucing their supply base while GM is sourcing Delphi radios from China. It is getting hard to tell what is made in the USA. I am just looking for a quality built vehicle. I am still looking.

I know for a fact that plastic manifolds used on the 3.8 litre will fail. GM is real proud of it they call it a 3800 Series. Ask any mechanic. GM knows they will fail. They know the majority are out of warrenty. Mine failed out of warrenty. 53,000 miles. Some last longer than mine did. My local NAPA keeps a manifold on the shelf. $300 part. It will fill the top end full of anti-freeze. I almost bent a rod. The engine wouldn't turn over. Lucky I caught on. I put a new manifold. They run an exhaust tube into the plastic manifold where thr throttle body connects to it. Then approx 1/8 inch away on both sides of this exhuast tube they have water jackets. All molded in plastic. Real smart. After being heated and cooled numerous times the plastic becomes brittle and fails letting anti-freeze to leak into the top of engine. I saved the manifold. As soon as I can figure out how to post a picture I will show you where it happens. I will never own another GM ever. They wonder why they continue to lose market share. I am not as upset that it failed as I am that they didn't evan try to make it right with GM owners. Exceed my expectations for once. Make it right.

I know what your talking about. I currently work at a Buick dealer. That Buick 3.8 V6 was one of GM's most trouble free engines from about 1988 to 1995 then they had to go and screw it all up with that junk intake. That 3.8 still can turn out some real good MPG figures. I don't know why a company thinks they need to build defects into products.

I know. I get 29 to 31mpg regulary. Drives great. It is my second Buick. It is my second 3.8. It is just that plastic intake that can ruin your engine if you are not careful that bothers me. If they would tell their customers that we messed up. I would be their customer forever. Nobody is perfect, not even engineers. I am sure the engineers designing it didn't intend on this happening. Maybe its the bean counters and lawyers running GM. I don't know, but it makes cautious of spending $20,000 on a new Buick.

That's unfortunate, but I kind've think that that kind've stuff is here to stay. Often caused by book (PC) smarts these days. It seems that the day of common sense and hands-on skill is going, going, ...

As a service technician, if I'm working on something or in an area that something gets blown out of the water, the first thing that I do is retrace my steps and take a look at it. I don't care for eating crow in front of a customer, but there's nothing like denying it to a customer, then having to go back and get caught with your pants down.

May as well just drop your pants in front of the customer and get it over with, fix what you probably caused, then beat feet before the cops get there for dropping your pants. Ha Ha Ha Ha.

Dealer integrity? We had a 1994 Chrysler product bought new. When it was "right", I loved it. Loved to drive it, etc. It seldom was right. Spent lots of time and money at the dealership. The "service adviser" had a "Five Star" award. One might think that means something good for the customer. WRONG! Every time we had service, he come up with concocted things to sell- new alternator, fuel injector service. I did not buy any of that and it was not needed. The award evidently was for selling lots of extra stuff for the dealership. I have a 1998 Ford truck and a 1998 Chev truck. The Ford has been more troublesome. Somewhere between 100K and 130K, the Chevy will typically require some rather expensive repairs.

I stared an new policy a couple of years ago, as soon as the warranty runs out, thru the door she goes.

Trouble with this one is, it has a 100K mile warranty, 'cause I opted for it when we bought it. :>(

I think it's gotta go tho; but darnit! It is one flashy truck and rides better than any car I've ever been in.

And so it goes; maybe we should all go back to the saddle horses.

I bought one brand new vehicle in my life, ordered it my way. A Dakota.

Did the usual dicker dance on the price, got it written down, paid the downpayment, they ordered it. I said total cost, out the door, tax, everything, no other costs. Fine.

When it came, they said on the phone already, oops they forgot a $100 dealer cost, if I would be willing to pay that. I didn't even reply.

When I got there & we tidied up the paperwork & were sitting beside it, sure enough the guy had a $100 extra charge on it, said well it was really a bill, I wasn't totally obligated to pay it but really it would be my bill.....

I just stared at him. I was really too upset to actually speak to him. I just stared. So, he did cross it off, and we finished up our business.

If he only knew how much business a rip-off stunt like that cost him. That was 12 years ago, & it is still _the_ memory I have of that dealership.

Handshake meant nothing to them.

Hi Paul,

Yes, this is the point I'm trying to make. It isn't the money; heck, ya can't even make a quick trip thru the grocery store for $100. But it is the principle of the thing.

I wonder if they even know how they can make people mad at 'em trying to pull the wool over like this.

These folks, so far, have tripped all over themselves to make me happy and I don't want to cause any undue strain.

But, I usualy let an outfit take one swipe at me; could just be an error in judgement or some such thing. And, if it ever happens again they are gonna see my wrangler patch a walkin' out the door.

I was forming in my head the fact that the price of beans had gone down 15 cents a bushel between the time we signed the deal & delivery of the pickup came, and if he wanted to reopen negociations I"d be happy to offer a bit less considering how things have changed for me as well.... Don't know if all the GM engines have the intake manifold leak problem, but I do know I just had the gaskets replace on my '98 Vortec 454. It had around 70K on it when they went. Dealer wanted $700 to do the job. I've got a pretty good mechanic in a 'Mom & Pop' type shop who did it for around $500. He even had the gaskets and so forth on hand. Says he does at least one a month on either a 350 or 454. He uses Felpro gaskets instead of the GM ones and says he hasn't had one come back yet.

Just got rid of my 2000 Jimmy with 75K on it. It had the 4.3 liter in it. The intake gaskets on that thing was about the ONLY thing that hadn't gone wrong with that entire car. Sure gled to get rid of it and hope the replacement Envoy with the 4.2 straight 6 will be a better car. Larry

I don't think it goes into the newer Silverado engines, not that I have heard of yet anyways. Is mostely the mid to late ninetys era. Seems to be several engines too---> 3.1, 5.0, 5.7
Is a relatively easy fix, just a thorn in the side really.

Not sure if the big one does this, also.

And it's not just GM. The wizards at Ford used plastic intake manifolds on the 4.6 "modular" V-8's, (amoungst others). Neighbor lost an engine in a Lincoln because the plastic water passage in the intake split. A year ot two later, the manifold on the replacement engine split. They stopped in time with that one. Ford's fix is a new aluminum intake $600.00+, not to mention other neeeded parts and labor.

Allan,Was your Yukon leaking on the ground? I just replaced an intake gasket on 98 Silverado with a 350 vortec for a buddy a couple of weeks ago.It was leaking internally.I'll go along with an external leak on a water pump. But if the leak is worse than before and is still an external leak then i think that they are shooting you a line of bull.Sounds like the repair was goofed up the first time. Most intake manifold leaks "not all" are internal coolant leaks. The coolant goes into the oil or is blown out through the exhaust system. If its still external they did'nt fix it or they messed something else up.Later.

Was it leaking water on the ground or just using water. If on ground it is not the intake gaskets. They do tend to leak but it is internal and gets burnt in the engine. Wouldn't go buying a Ford yet, they have bad dealerships too! Look for another dealer.

I went about 300 miles to pick up a tractor a few months back. Before I got there my Chevy started leaking antifreeze. Turned out to be the intake gasket. It did leak externally and bad. There was a nice guy in Alabama where I was heading checked it out and told me it was the intake. Said i would have to wait till Monday. Noplace to stay so I bought some stop leak at his shop. He said the leak was too bad for that to work. I made it all the way home without losing any more coolant but had the intake gasket changed when I got home and now is working great. The mechanic at home said this was common to Chevys and GMC trucks.

The intake water passage gaskets CAN (and do) leak externally, or internally, or both.

Ah yes, I thought about it a bit harder and realized that they could in fact leak externally. Thanks for the correction though.

Hey Bob!

Yeah, it was leaking out on the garage floor. That wasn't the rub.

The darned registered cats that the wife raises were out there lickin' it up and gettin' really sick.

It's just not nice to fool with ol' Mother Nature here. :>)

Gave up on GM products a long time ago- they just don't stay put-together good for me. I've had good luck with Ford and Dodge trucks both, but there's lemons amoung all of 'em and I wouldn't trust a dealership farther than I could throw it! just my .02

Once upon a time, I was a die-hard Chevy/GMC fan myself. A 1988 Chevy 1-ton, and a 1997 GMC 3/4 ton took care of that. The 88 Chevy was a lemon from the start. It went through SIX intake gaskets, a transmission, 2 heater cores, an air conditioning compressor, an AM/FM radio, the windshield cracked while setting in the garage having the radia fixed, and the radiator leaked the entire time I owned it. And THEN...It had this habit of the horn going off whenever the temperature dropped below 5 degrees. Imagine the fun of getting up at 4:00AM, running out in the cold, and disconnecting the fuse to "dis-arm" the horn....AFTER getting a phone call from my next door neighbor about the horn waking his wife...
All that after trading the best truck I ever owned on the blasted thing. (A 1984 Toyota 4WD)
The second mis-adventure with GM was the '97 GMC truck. All that was wrong with it was the oil pan....It wouldn't hold the 2 rods that went through the bottom of it ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP....With the sticker still in the window. After it was "fixed", it became a moving target. As no fault of it's own (I assume), it was the victim of THREE rear-end collsions. All three while I was setting at traffic lights. I now own 2 Dodge trucks, 1 Ford truck, 1 Kenworth, and 1 Toyota pick-em-up. My wife still insists on owning a Chevy, only because no one else makes a Corvette. She still has a "back-up vehicle", a 1994 Olds Cutlass Cierra with only 5700 miles on the clock. Too many vehicles..... ....John

I KNOW you seen my post on Tales the other day, about her Mopar Van. Durn tie- rod end busted on mile marker 184 on I-65, 45 min before I was to go in and have surgery! After it was towed in to local Dodge dealership, it only cost us a tad over THREE HUNDRED BUCKS to get two new tie rod ends, and an alignment! D@mn Mopar warrenties and service have NEVER been worth a darn, far as I'am concerned. Chevy's not cheep either, but I've had far less trouble with them! As far as getting rear-ended, that's not the trucks fault, John....

Before you get too mad, think about this. The intake manifold leaks coolant into the crankcase on those engines (the manifold is the valley cover). Anything more than little coolant in the oil eats bearings. At a minimum make them test the oil for the presence of coolant. GM dealers will not do so unless you demand it. They don't even have the sense to change the oil.

FelPro makes a replacement gasket set with a GM part number.

Great catch!

Guess is kind've like replacing a timing belt or chain, then not dropping the oil pan to get broken teeth or rubber out before it gets sucked up into the oil pump sump, clogs the screen, and causes serious damage. Happens every day.

Evidently, I've got this flashing "Stupid" sign up on my brow and they would probably try to ding me the $100 deductible for each bad bearing. :>)

You jest. A local guy got nailed by the obviously corrupt local Chevy dealer for $6,500 to replace a Vortec 454 that broke a crank due to a coolant seized bearing.

But Ron,

If I don't jest, I'll go into one of me "depression" moods. :>)

Heck with it; It already has quite a few miles on it and is about ready for someone else to own pretty soon anyway. And most of the time it just sets in the garage; don't put more than about 5K miles a year on it.

I just don't wanna spend any money 'till the wife and I get this chunk of ground bought. Don't know yet how hard that is gonna hit the old piggy bank.

'Sides, like an old mechanic told me when I was just a kid, "No use gettin' mad at it; it is just a piece of iron".

Been rainin' here all day; you guys gettin it up there?

Allan,

Took an 88' tree down for a lady who didn't want it to crush her house nor damage her fancy cedar clothesline posts. Nobody else would do the job. I cabled it and use my trusty Oliver to tug on it while I cut. Sure enough, dead center right between the posts. The instant it hit the ground it started to rain and has continued all day. Supposed to rain for the next two days. When it dries up, I'll go back and buck the thing clean.

It's a dealer-level problem, not a GM problem. You could just as easily run into the same thing at a Ford dealership. Kind of like guys I've seen on here complaining about Deere when it's the dealer's problem. The parent corporation can't control everything, unfortunately. But I agree that they didn't fix the original problem the first time, and that the intake gaskets leaking "since the original repair" is a crock. I'd tell them to stick any further deductible you know where, and that if they're so "customer-oriented", they should fix it right the first time.

Naw it's a GM problem. The intake gasket is a silicon bead imbedded in plastic. Torque on it is like 15 in oz or thereabouts. It's a new idea with aluminum intake manifold probably due to squirming differences between cast iron and alum.

The leak is real hard to find. Took me 6 months of dedicated looking plus a tip from a friend to find mine.

Lots of people with post '96 GM trucks are having the problem. Should have recalled them.

When I got mine off, I compared it to the new Federal Mongul I bought and the quality of the OEM was obviously very substandard.

The leak may be a GM problem, but the manner in which it is being handled is a dealer problem. That was my point. Too many people have a bad dealer experience and blame the manufacturer, when in most cases, the manufacturer has no idea what's going on. If this is a known problem, Allan should have received much better service from his dealer.

I had a 94 GMC half ton four wheel drive. It was a good truck overall but the talk on the intake gasket leaks got me remembering my experience with that...

I had fixed the stupid little plastic snaptogether assembly where the heater hose hooks to the block ( it was leaking so I had to buy a new plastic snaptogether piece...stupid design, but im sure it helps assembly on the line ).

Once that leak was fixed.....I noticed antifreeze leaking from around the intake manifold gaskets...I had to retorque the bolts on it to get the leaks on that to quit.

It was very odd, only time I remember that happening. It was a 350, 5.7 liter engine, at least all the pieces involved on the intake were metal, not plastic.
