I have a tractor for sale on yt. This guy named john Ferberd emails me asking how much. Then after i tell him how much and how he would have to pay he emails me back about a week and one half later saying the check is on the way from his client and let him know when i get it so he can have his shipper get the tractor. Does this smell fishy to any one besides me? Does any one buy tractors sight unseen? or am i too paranoid?

The check will clear "Locally" then about a week later you will be owing the bank XX,XXX$$ Cashiers checks are aparently Now easy to counterfeit, and it will most likely look verry authentic. "The routing numbers will even be good"
The lacal bank will probably cash it on the spot.
and the scamer will tell you to send remaining funds to his ""Shipper in ths USA"" but the funds will be sent to a western union OVERSEAS. Western union has NO protection for YOU.
About 4 days after you cah the check either the bank or the PD. will call you and say they need their money back and you are.. SCREWED.

Now it wont cost you anything for him to send you the check and SEE if it clears.. but it wont.

Anyone who is getting offers from sellers like this, PLEASE CONTACT ME. I am doing everything in my power to track these guys down. The checks come from NIGERIA "No one has jurisdiction" However. There are also operatived in the norway area. INTERPOL does have jurisdiction. If enough of us would contact them at the same time. They would probably show a lot more interest in catching them. Simple "Sting" operations would be effective.
Please contact me and lets exchange information.
and, Remember: If it sounds to good to be true 99% it is, and if your gut says something is up.. go1pse@msn.com

Lets get these guys. Its gotta stop.

I was on an antique car web site last night and they had a warning about just such a scam. Buyer sends check, sometimes more than asking price, often from another country, requesting a refund of excess money. Take the check to the bank, verify funds, wait 15 days to make sure it all clears. THEN, the fellow can come get his tractor. I understand your concern and suspision. Hope it all turns out ok and you really did sell your tractor. If its a scam, get the FBI involved.

It smells awfully fishy to me, too. I would be VERY leery, but...
When (if?) the check gets there, take it to the bank. Let them know that you"re suspicious of it and see what they"ve got to say. If it clears (plus a couple of weeks or so, to make sure nothing "sneaks up on ya"), then I suppose it just might be legitimate and you could then release the tractor.

As everybody else has mentioned, I would run about as fast as I could (in the opposite direction, of course) from a check for over the amount. If he wants to play that "game" (and it turns out to be a legitimate check, which it won"t) then... hey, nice bonus!!

Just my humble opinion...
Steve

My experiences with purchases is that when you see it you had better plunk your money down; lest someone else does that while you are codgitating.

The fact that the guy waits 10 days before reply correspondence puts me on alert. Could be someone who commercially buys tractors and doesn't care if he gets it or not. If that's the case, maybe it explains the delay.

As stated, send no money back, and take the check to your bank and have your bank inform you when it has cleared the issuing agency. Then let the tractor go.

I too have bought tractors on the web and have been satisfied..... but when I see one I jump on it, I don't wait 10 days to start asking questions.

Good luck,

Mark

Yes, this guy is for real, and he is looking for suckers to give him tractors BEFORE his cheque bounces like a rubber ball.

It"s a crock.

If you go ahead with it, do not call, release, or send anything _until_ your bank 100% garentees the funds are _yours_. Get that in writing.

If an international check esp, the crocks have figured out ways to copy or make duplicates of real checks, so your bank will be told sure it"s a good check - until 2 checks come back to the original bank some time later, and then whoops, you have to refund the money out of your pocket. This check clearing can take a _loooong_ time.

I"d throw it in the trash & forget about it.

I smell a scam & a sucker ta boot . Don't fall for it or we'll be reading about you being scammed for the next several months . There's surely been enough discussion on these boards that people would not even have to ask what we think . As my Dad used to say : the first time you get screwed - it's the other guys fault ; the next time it's your own fault . So now do what ya want to do it.

Well, if the check clears, who cares? The tractor sold. Is your tractor a hard to find item? or maybe what this fellow has been looking for.

Jim - I have bought tractors without personally seeing them but I always had pictures and discussions with the seller. Then I would overnight a bank check to the seller, and pick up the tractor after the seller was comfortable.

Like Bob said below, NEVER agree to send any money back, and make sure all your money is in your hands before you let your tractor go.

If someone wants your tractor bad enough, they can spend 10 bucks to overnight the check to you. Don"t waste your time with someone who drags out the process and plays the "check is in the mail" game.

Go to the top of the page and type "scam" in the search box.

If you still don't believe it, if the check arrives, take it to your banker, and have them verify the check. DO NOT under any circumstances, send back the any excess funds, or release the tractor until the banker will "guarantee" that the check was good.
