just got back from looking at a 5000 ford. looks good, has recent paint job. also owner said , new clutch, some injector work, pto brake, power steering. sounds good and all gears seem ok. here's the problems. the pto still turns out of gear. he said it will stop if an implement is attached. he said he put in a pto brake about a year ago. when the engine is off, there is about a complete turn of slack in the steering wheel. also the steering wheel will not turn the wheels sitting still, when you are moving the steering seems fine. there is a little movement in the steering cylinder while you are attempting to turn the wheels. like it may have some loose slack. need help please. sorry for long post. thanks

I just finished repairing the steering on an early 5000,in the prosess I found out they have a common problem. The p/s cylinder under the radiator pivots on a pin and this pin is supported at its top by a weak casting that is prone to breakage.I called 10 different junk yards looking for the casting and no one had one.The part is no longer available thru Ford.I ended up fabricating a support out of steel and bolting it in.

The unwillingness of the pto to shut off is a 5000 trait. The early models, which we had, did not have the internal brake. If the clutch disks are warped it will have a greater tendency to turn. Cold weather will also contribute to more turning. An empty manure spreader will stall it the shaft with everything right. Ours was a '65 manual steer, a year or two later the power was bumped up. Seems to me it should turn the wheels standing still.

thanks for the responce. it appears the power steering on the tractor is factory installed. the cylinder is in front of the radiator. the whole cylinder unit wiggles a little when the steering wheel is turned. but it simply will not turn when the tractor is sitting still. does well when the tractor is moving. also there is a loader that come with it. it runs off the remote hydraulics of the tractor. since there is these questions about it and i'm not a mechanic, i think i will pass on this one. thanks for the advice/info.

I agree the PTO thing is a 5000 trait that in general can be lived with, however it sounds to me like you have power steering problems.Perhaps a dealer could gestimate problem/cost.You should be able to turn the wheels at rest,at least on factory power steering. There IS a possibility of it being an aftermarket"power assist" kit though, which may be different.
