Went to Ken Ungers Estate auction last night of 17 JD L's. Saw a a model 62 go for $37,400 (34,000 plus 10 percent buyers premium). I knew green was $green, but that's just nuts. There was a long distance bidder on a cell phone, and the guy who bought the tractor looked like he would have kept going no matter what that phone guy bid. It's an old L. I guess there must be some reasoning there somewhere, but I think you could buy about 20 decent tractors that you can actually hear run before you buy. You got to love America.

I thought the rest of the L's went a little cheap, but some of the local farmers were grumblin about the prices, and how useless these tractors were, and why should they sell for so much, etc. All in all it was good theatre. I didn't buy anything.

Take Care
Steve

Dale is correct. The "62" was built in extremely small numbers, and was basically the production prototype for the unstyled "L". The most striking difference is the "JD" on the "chin" under the radiator. What sticks in my mind is that there were something like 83 built. Figuring attrition over the years, perhaps only half that many are still around. Barring one-off prototypes and experimental tractors, the "62" is one of the rarest Deeres ever made. Anybody interested in old Deeres would love to have a "62". You were lucky to get to see one sell.

There were very few model 62s built. I can not recall the number off the top of my head but it was less than of just a little over 100.

There were 150 Minn. Moline UDLX's built, and they are bringing up to $100,000. About the same number of Cockshutt Golden Arrows, and some guy has been trying to get 10 grand for his in the Photo Ads off and on for a year. None of this is really about the intrinsic or "work" value of these tractors, so I guess there's nothing wrong with $37,400 for a rare model. I'm about to spend $300 for a part for the 3 point on my Cockshutt 35, and once I get her painted up, the 3 point will never be used. Am I wasting the $300? I don't think so, and that's what counts.

The only thing I see wrong and can't figure out is why I never have any of the good stuff !

Oh, I assure you- you (and I) have had some of the good stuff over the years- but we wisely decided it was junk, and gleefully hauled it off to the dump years ago. I don't care what it would be worth now- I still think my Roy Rogers lunch pail (complete with Thermos) was dorky, and it deserved to be thrown into the brush (and its disappearance explained to Mom as theft by an unknown kid).

Saturday, I went to a household auction, and saw a bicycle designed to be riden on a railroad track sell for $6K! That makes about as much sense as high priced JDs!
