i'm not sure what to think on this all, but maybe my friends on YT may shed some light on this. today i noticed a help wanted sign in the window at work(i am a mechanic at a case ih dealership). although that may say little to most, i will try to explain the story some. i graduated from tech school last year for tractor mechanics and got hired on that this shop which was an hour from ma and pa's place, so i had to move to this town for work. i grew up on other brands of equipment but i knew i could handle red, but from day one the boss there acted odd around me....you just never felt comfortable. so anyway, i feel as though work was going good thru-out the year but different times the boss would say i wasnt doing a "good enough job" but the shop foreman and other co-workers have no complaints. granted i am new to this industry, i will take "some" more time....anywho, a week ago he said he wants a talk and about all he knew was that i wasnt doing a good enough job for him again and to either pay for my extra time after flat rate or to quit. talk about trying to hang someone!!!! anyway, he said we'll talk again on it, which he never did and today there is a help wanted sign in the window. co-workers said its for the shop.....i am assuming its for my head, since we are plum full of workers....i dunno what to think, you try your best and the guy busts your butt over his bottom line....i dunno, mostly wanna vent, but comments are welcome. my days are probably ending at this shop soon.....

Not that it will change the situation, but this boss, is/was a wrench himself, or just the money man? The best hands on people seem to lose their minds (forget their roots) when they get put in front of the ledger (bottom dollar). A hostile work environment isn't good for anyone, especially you. You could ask to meet with him, and the meeting could turn out good, or very badly, especially if he has an anti-you agenda. It would be a great idea to get your resume together, and either use satisfied customers and co-workers that you can trust as references. Typically, resumes say "References Upon Request". Can they contact your current employer? Tough question, especially if he has an "anti-you" agenda - you could get smoked. Could he be hiring additional help because sales/service/customer base has increased, and this new person will only be an addition to the talent? The best advise that I can give you, or anyone is simple, Confidence in yourself: If that guy can do it, it can be done, so you can too, at anything, and with some practice, not only can you do it, but you can do it better. Confidence, confidence, and self assurance. Good luck, Mark.IN.

If you are good, go into business for yourself. Set up shop at your parents place to start with.

Johns,

I agree.

You never get anywhere working for someone else; you just get used up.

My opinion,

Allan

You have two choices, one's easy one's not so easy. The easy one is to go find an other job , solves the problem until you find your self in the same situation again but only some where else.

Choice two, go to the boss and tell him you want to have a meeting with him first thing in the A.m. before work starts, Then lay it all out to him and listen to what he has to say, maybe there is something your not seeing and which he does or he might just be a jerk with chip on his shoulder. leave your self enough time to talk before work starts. If in say half an hour you can't find happy ground, then tell him your giving your notice. SAy to him you tried your best to resolve the situation and could not and that you will be seeking employment in an other shop were communication is just as valuable a skill as wrenching. Plus you will feel better inside that you tried to change things. And you will have no regrets because its harder to look back with regret than with satisfaction.

:-)

Kentuckykid, Here my 2 cents worth, I would take Paul's advice and do exactly what he has stated. When I was talking to him I would look him squarely in the eyes all the time. You have nothing to fear from this type of person. Good luck.

Kentuckykid, First of all, your boss has a problem that he will never admit to. When he says you aren't doing a good enough job, in all actuality, he is'nt doing a good enough job himself. Here's why. Any "Good" boss would never ever make a statement like that without telling you exactly why he feels you aren't doing a good job, and what he expects you to do to improve your performance. A Good boss will let you know up front what he percieves as your shortcommings, and why he feels you aren't doing a good job. There is absolutely no way you can improve your performance if you don't know what you are doing wrong in the first place. That is your boss's job to communicate that to you, and not simply say you arent doing a good enough job. That is totally unaccptable. Now that we have that settled, here's exactly what I would do. You have every reason to believe that he plans to fire you as soon as he can find someone to take your place, maybe even sooner, so why would you allow that to happen? You can be passive and get eaten alive there or you can be the one who is proactive. What I would do in your case is to ask for a short meeting in private with your boss to discuss something very important. Do not tell him what it is before he gives you five minutes of his time. Once you are in his office, (make sure that your eyes are above his..... do not sit where he is looking down on you) immediately tell him that you have to have a raise to continue working there. Don't tell him you want a raise, but that you have to have a raise to continue working there. Tell him that with your technical schooling, and experience, that you realize that you have been working for him for far too little pay, and benefits, and you feel you deserve a significant raise. You know he is going to deny you, since he has already put up the help wanted sign, so you then tell him that since he is not willing to pay you what you are worth, that you can no longer work for him. You tell him that you are much to valuable a mechanic to be languishing in a shop for sub-standard compensation, and that you have other places that recognize your value. That gives you a sound reason to walk out. YOu haven't lost a thing since you are going to be fired anyway. This way, he can't say he fired you. If he does, he is setting himself up for some serious legal issues. Being fired is not the end of the world, especially if you don't know its comming, but since you do know its comming, why become dead meat. You be in control of how you leave.

We've all been there! Move on quickly but as you do so, try to look at things from both sides. Really try hard to take things from his perspective if you can, and see if there isn't something you can learn from it to help you out the next time.

Same advice as the others - find another job so you can be happy. Look for a job now while you still have a paycheck: It's always easier to find a job when you don't "need" one. If your rotten boss fires you before you find another job, lay a guilt trip on him and tell him the least he can do is provide you with a "To Whom It May Concern" letter of reference. He'll probably give it to you and you can use it with your resume in the future without having anyone actually contact him for a reference. Also, if he tries to deny you unemployment compensation, you'll have his own reference letter to prove you were a good employee!

Thats really the best advice you can give, find another job while you still have one. You can say that you don't want your current employer contacted on your resume. Most employers will understand that, since alot of employers will let you go on the spot, if they find out that you are looking for another job.
If you quit before finding another job, most employers will want a reference from your previous employer. Since your boss sounds like a jerk, do you really want him giving a reference on you? Also like one of the other posters said NEVER bad mouth your boss to a another prospective employer, even if he is a total jerk. Good Luck.

Go to another dealer, no matter what tractor brands they sell and put in an application. If they ask the reason for looking say anything other than the boss doesnt like me. Besides if the guy doesnt have the balls to tell you what is bugging him then you need to start looking.

You will find a place that will appreciate you.

Hi Young Man,

I have been were you are.

I would strongly suggest you get out of there--today. You will never make him happy and you will drive yourself crazy trying.

Move on, things will be better down the road. I promise.

Sounds like the writing is on the wall, you don't want to work there anyway when the work environment is so fearful. You can do better. Add it to your resume and move on, and good luck. You sound like a conscientious guy with a good work ethic and you deserve better than some pinhead boss that plays games.

Hey there! Go find another job, as you are in a dead end job. The boss already said you were not good enough for him so you will never make him happy.I ran a Vermeer dealership for 25 years and through some unethical nonsense on the part of the factory the dealership changed hands and even though the previous owners were very pleased with my performance and the customers let the new owners know that the only way they would keep doing business is if I stayed, I was let go after 25 years because I had problems getting around and I would not conform to the new lack of business ethics. So now I am gone and the Store is gone.Be glad this happened before you invested the most productive years of your life, Remember there is no loyalty in business anymore. If you are decent you will find another job and if you're then you are in the wrong occupation anyway !

Sounds like you have a clash with the boss.... I have been there myself, Seemed the harder I tried, the less he thought of me.Ask the boss to sit down with you & discuss your future and any concerns or problems he has with your performance on the job. If he will not discuss it, or is very unhappy with your work, my advice is to look for other employment,& soon. In fact , if you find something soon, I suggest not even working a notice.... after all , if he fires you, is he going to give you 2 weeks..... I doubt it. Looking back at my working career, I spent way too much time at jobs where my future was limited. Regards, Davis

kentuckykid;

Best to move on. The sooner the better. I have been thru that also. Take a temporoary job if you can. I did that and it turned into a full time job untill they changed plant managers. After working other temp.jobs I started my own business. I am now retired.

Don't wanna steal any of your company secrets or anything, but how'd ya get to that "retired" part?

Seems like the more I try to retire, the more I end up doing. :>(

Allan;

That is a good question. Way back in 1996 I was involved in two injury accidents. I ended up with a bum knee,a bad back and I am now in the early stage of Parkinsons.

I am 66 yrears old and on SS. That covers half of our expenses. The other half comes from the farm sale. It might last us 10 years. Sold land, cattle, tractors and equipment and whatever else goes on a farm machinery auction.

We were living north of Grand Island NE. We now live in the south of NM not too far from the Rio Grande. It is hot and dry here. Enuf of this bs.

Be careful and stay well.

Steve,

You were just down the road from me a piece.

I had to go thru the same farm sale thing in '83.

No one could have stuck a knife in my gut and made it hurt any worse....still hauling around a lot of garbage over that one.

Hang in there ole bud, your're a good 'un,

Allan

Been on both sides of the desk. My advise. Ask for a sit down and question in a respectfull maner what area you could improve in. You efforts maybe lacking in other than technical areas that could be corrected with some additional education.
