IH 504 Generator??? Problems

I am posting this here because I think I am having an electrical problem of a generic nature instead of IH specific troubles.

Background: I purchased an IH 504 gasser about 2 months ago for use around our acreage (mowing pasture, digging post holes, loader work, etc.) Tractor is 12 volt with a rebuilt generator on it. It worked like a top for a while then it would not start without being jumped. This did not bother me too much since the tractor still worked after being jumped. I figured I would keep using it and decipher the problem when I had time.

Problem: I had a lot of tractor work I wanted to do today, but now it won't run with any load. It was fine for a while this morning doing loader work, but after a while the trouble started. I can jump it and get it running and it will idle fine. As soon as I try to load up the engine with the loader or even just to move the tractor it dies. If I am really careful I can get it moving in first and move it around, but I can't let the clutch out slow enough to keep it running in any other gear. It will lift the loader empty, but dies as soon as I try to lift any weight.

Thoughts: This tractor had a new battery in it when I bought it. I am thinking that it started fully charged and would start the tractor fine. If the charging system is not working, it discharged until it would not start the tractor, but had enough juice to keep it running. Now it is discharged enough that it won't keep the engine running under load. I am not sure why this would be affected by load though. Any incite would be appreciated. How do I begin to trouble shoot this?

Thanks

Hello, I had the same problem. Every time I would give it the gas, or let out on the clutch, mine would go dead. It would start right back up and then do it again. The problem on mine was a loose wire on the ignition switch. It would make contact to start the tractor, but would lose contact anytime the tractor would vibrate then go dead. I tightened the wire and have no problems with it since. It took me weeks of looking to find the wire. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Sounds like the regulator is sticking and draining the battery and may have burned up the field coils and/or the armature in the generator by now. When the battery voltage drops below about 8 volts because the generator is not charging, it will not fire the coil strong enough to sustain engine speed more than a low idle rpm. When you charge the battery enough by jumping it off to crank it you put some voltage back in the battery to run a while. Sounds like the generator and regulator need checking and probably repairing and don't forget to polarize the regulator. If it is to be a working tractor why not install one of the GM one wire alternators for 12 volts and save a lot of money and hassle ? Gene Davis

You might try charging the battery. It sounds like it doesen't have enough charge left in it to produce spark. HTH

I had to go buy a charger, but it is hanging on the tractor now. I will know more in the morning.

Thanks
